Looking for a climber the color of red onion/cabbage

I'm looking for a purply-red climbing rose that's similar in hue to red onion or red cabbage if that makes sense. Anything that might grow as large as 6 to 12', or even a larger shrub. Fragrance and repeat bloom would also be wonderful. I'm in zone 6, NE Ohio. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

There are a number of roses that can be that color, but it's a color that depends on the growing conditions and the age of the flower. It's also hard to tell from the photos, since it is a color that is hard to capture. How about Night Owl? Reine des Violettes?

I'm always looking for a similar color that I call Beetroot. So much so, that I created a Pinterest page.

noseometer, What a glorious Pinterest page...thank you for sharing! This is exactly the resource I need. I spent some time researching yesterday and I think Night Owl fits the bill best, but I'm not entirely happy with the bloom form. If Munstead Wood were ever to sport into a climber it would be perfect.

Please stay away from Chateau de Clos Vougeot. It's a very weak and spindly plant, and I can personally confirm that it's a MAJOR PM DISASTER and also way up in the BS league. I wasn't even that thrilled with its floppy blooms. They never looked like that symmetrically petaled wonder bloom photo on HMF. I don't think the climbing version would be any better than the original I had. There are so many much much much better smelly reds out there, also among climbers. Check out the classic and strongly perfumed Ena Harkness, weak neck, but that's not bad in a climber. Or Climbing Etoile Hollande, or Crimson Glory. Or Gruss an Teplitz (check for hardiness though). Or Naheglut/That's Jazz. Or Dublin Bay, as others here have mentioned. As to Sympathy, I assume that it's the German rose Sympathie (note the difference in spelling ), bred by Kordes. We have some huge heads of red cabbage to deal with, so I'm glad to see this thread. I made one of the heads into this Ruby Kraut (full recipe link below). A nearly-five-pound head fit into a half gallon wide mouth canning jar...I must be a good smoosher, hehe. It turned out great. We made cole slaw with it the other night...a little mayo and a tich of sugar...yum. Ruby Kraut Makes 4 quarts Ingredients: For the vegetables 4 pounds red cabbage 1 pound carrots 3 tablespoons pickling salt For the spices 2 teaspoons celery seeds, divided 2 teaspoons dill seeds, divided 2 teaspoons black peppercorns, divided 2 bay leaves For the brine (optional, if needed) 4 cups water 2 tablespoons pickling salt A couple of years ago I made a batch of Spiced Red Cabbage from the Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving. Wasn't too thrilled with it, and then I threw a pint on the stove with a couple of browned pork chops nestled in and cooked it slow. Really good. Here is a link that might be useful: Ruby Kraut

Do you know what variety of onions they are? I assume you are somewhere in the south where short day onions can be grown thru the winter. I believe mid/late April is usually when the growers in Georgia harvest the short day Vidalia onions but then I purchased some at the grocer this past weekend so it maybe earlier. If these were not a short day type then that may be why they had not bulbed up yet. They do look like they might have just started to bulb before you pulled them. I don't think you will have any luck with putting them back in the ground but it wouldn't hurt to try I guess. When onions bulb, about 2/3 of the bulb is visible above ground as long as they were planted at the correct 1" depth so it is easy to determine how far along they are. Drmbear gave you good information on how to tell when they are ready to harvest. Tough lesson to learn but gardening is a never ending lesson!

I can my red cabbage, so the recipe is for a large quantity. Sweet and Spiced Red Cabbage 24 to 30 cups red cabbage, sliced fine (2 mil blade on FP) 1 cup cider vinegar 2 cups red wine vinegar 2 cups light brown sugar ½ cup honey (orange blossom is fantastic for this) 1 cup water 1Tbs. cinnamon 2 sticks cinnamon (or increase ground by 1 Tbs.) 1 Tbs. ground Allspice ½ tsp. mace 3 bay leaves 8 whole cloves 2 Tbs. kosher or canning salt 1 cup dry red wine (Pinot Noir is good, cook drinks the rest) Place all in pressure cooker/canner at 10 psi and cook for 9 to 10 minutes. Let sit for 5 minutes to open and cool. To can: place hot cabbage, well packed with liquid to ¼” headspace, in quarts or pints and BWB for 25 minutes. Remove bay leaves and stick cinnamon. Note: All seasoning are to taste. May need more cinnamon when serving.

Arlene, depending on conditions and your final height requirement Munstead Wood could work. Mine grafted MW has suddenly sent out huge long canes in its first season; it doesn't know it's meant to be short and bushy!

Vaporvac, I planted MW this fall and am excited to see how it does. Most of the Austins I have did put out those long octopus canes in their first year or two so it wouldn't surprise me if MW behaves the same way. My Queen of Sweden has two canes over six feet tall at the moment. I need MW to stay short in the place where I have it, though, so any canes like that are going to get pruned back.

For the spot where I'm looking for red cabbage color, I decided to go with Reine des Violette. This is a shaded area with acidic soil so I hope to get those purply hues. To be safe, I am also planting Darcey Bussell and Ebb Tide in the same bed, hoping the overall color scheme works together and achieves the effect I'm after.

Just found this thread and though you have decided on gorgeous Reine des Violette, I'll still give you my 2 cents worth if you should ever want more of this color.

Wow, that Erinnerung an Brod looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing. Too bad it's a once bloomer since the weather here is the worst at that time of the year. I've read one review that says it takes heat and wind well though. BTW, the Rogue Valley Roses website says they have it in stock.

Noseometer, EaB looks much like Charles de Mills to my eye, and much less invasive. I'm in the process of trying to take out about a million Charlie suckers. I think you can get the same effect with EaB. It is a climber, but I grow mine as a large shrub on a tetour to keep the middle of it upright.
