Annie Sloan Chalk paint?? Help me de-ugly my kitchen!
Comments (36)Hey, gang! Major delays in posting....lots of house projects...then, our sweet baby boy arrived, so I've been otherwise engaged. :) Just a quick picture or two while the boys nap. These are outdated but were the first I was able to find quickly. I'll find the updated pictures later when I have more time and will share them with you. Quick note: The paint/wax are holding up beautifully. I'm glad, though, with little hands around, that I went with a colored wax (made my own color). It's been SO nice to not have to worry when our just-turned-two year old bang something on a cabinet or touches it with hands fresh out of the sandbox. :) And, yes, we had our first goop get on it last week: spaghetti sauce, which wiped right off without issue. I was impressed. Again, i going "new," I'd not have done distressed/chalk paint/wax, but for our current situation, this stuff is working out beautifully. HUGE sigh of relief from this time/funding strapped momma. :) As for paint, it took less than two cans. Wax took almost two. I *think*...it's been a while and I've had a few other things on my mind lately. LOL! Yes, I painted the hardware. Someone previously put shellac over it, and I couldn't get it off. The paint is working out well there, too. What a great surprise!! In the wide view, you can see it was taken midway through the waxing. Look at the top cabinets, and you'll be able to tell the one on the left does not yet have the colored wax applied. It just has a first coat of the clear wax. And, for the record, my then pregnant self never climbed up and put the last coat (colored wax) on the cabinet above the fridge. One of these days.... :) There's just so much to do around here! Slow and steady (or not)....See MoreHelp me fix an ugly kitchen on a budget
Comments (32)I think your kitchen is honestly not as bad as you think. So my advice with projects like yours is to make your list of the things that bother you the most, and roughly how expensive and difficult they are to fix, and ONE BY ONE fix the things that bother you the MOST and are LEAST expensive and/or difficult to fix. There is no hard and fast formula. It's basically an approach that urges you to go slow and tackle the projects that give you the most impact per dollar. aka, prioritize. The idea is that most people think they have to fix, say 7 things to stop hating their kitchen. But in reality, after 3 or 4, the other things won't bother you. Then stop! And you won't have bought materials or committed to contractors or demoed those other projects. Once you do the work on the bathroom, and perhaps other unexpected things you may need to do around the house, you can go back and decide whether to finish your list. Or to save your money for retirement, kids education, your next home or a more extensive renovation. Me? I'd clean everything, paint the cabinets (I have gray cabinets and like them a lot) and wainscoting. I don't mind the floor, but you don't like it, so that's a priority for you. I took some of the doors off my cabinets for an open-shelving look -- it's nice for glasses and things you use a lot. You could replace a couple with glass doors for some variety -- if you find that appealing. Enjoy you new home!...See MoreHelp! Does my kitchen plan look weird?
Comments (21)Jan M I get the point about the balancing and totally agree that the shelving is too much. Not so sure about the "look" comment though, I definitely have a certain design aesthetic that I'm going for with the farmhouse sink and the shelves and fridge and all, I think it's really going to pull together when it's finished and look really nice. The fridge is not small, it is narrow yes, but it's 75" tall so it is actually taller than a Bosch stainless fridge (which is what my other appliances are). If I ever need to replace the fridge, I can replace it with the 24" wide Bosch one and build it in more. I am definitely going to take you guys' advice about the glass cabinets along the fridge wall though. This is what I sent the designer this morning So it should look kind of like this layout-wise (stove wall/pantry/fridge), except the fridge will be surrounded by glass-front cabinets down that whole wall....See MoreUpdating my late 90s kitchen with weird peninsula - help!
Comments (21)Cool, Anglophilia. I didn't get a KD for my new kitchen because I (like you) didn't trust HD or other big boxes on doing it, and nor did I seem (as far as I know/knew) to have a KD in this area not associated with a line or so of products that I'd be forced into choosing from. Instead, I basically utilized the resources here at the Kitchen Forum to hone down some of my thought processes, and they helped me make a better kitchen than I would otherwise have created on my own. (Under counter drawers; ice, water, stone, fire; landing spot before fridge, induction range, a prep sink, even the brand of sink I went with... a few other things like the entry to the pantry...) Yes, I didn't take every bit of advice, but I certainly appreciated it all. If I knew of a reliable KD in my area who I knew up front (this is hard to determine...) wasn't promoting his or her own line, I may have considered. And again, as long as I have the choice to do certain specific elements to my own needs, after fully considering suggestions I will usually take, a KD could be very useful. EDIT: As of this date, are there things I wish I had done that I neglected? No. Well, discounting the things the GC didn't do that I requested, but I'm so done with 98% of the build (most right but ... ) that I no longer care about those little specific things... place for vertical pans... the amount of drawers vs cabs I originally specified... I gotta remain focused elsewhere....See Morenuhouse10
