Windows 10 Insider Preview 14965 On My Computer 11-17-2016 Question

I am so angry with this update. That is because it is trying to force me to use Edge which I do not like at all. Try it every once in awhile and just don't care for it at all. Now, with this newest update, anytime I click on a link in an email I get to an IE screen that just shows the URL addy at the top; that also happens when I use Chrome. With Edge this does not happen. So, thought I would go ahead and use Edge. But I still don't like it. I don't know what to uninstall though, because when I look at the installs it appears that nearly everything was updated on 11-17-2016. And I see nothing that notes the installation of 14965. Do any of you know what I need to delete in order for IE and Chrome to work correctly.

With this update, I am beginning to not care for Microsoft and their tactics at all.

Been trying to resolve this and, so far, no luck. Here is a copy of the string that was loaded on the IE website when I clicked on a link in an email. The whole screen was white except for the string at the very top.

The saga continues. I do have access to IE 11. The problems exists when clicking on links within emails. For example, the one above.

I got rid of IE soon after W10 install and use only Edge and FF only for Java run chat rooms, I like Edge very much and have n/p's at all with it works great quick and efficient.

It's probably popping up as you describe because Internet Explorer or Edge (it's unclear to me what you're looking at) is set as the default browser.

There's no need to delete anything (and doing so isn't advisable). Start Chrome, go to the Settings section and make it the default browser. That should solve the problem.

It's common behavior whenever a program that competes with others is installed, that it sets itself as the default for certain activities or file types. To the exclusion of others. Microsoft is hardly alone in doing this, most programs do so, it's nothing to get upset about.

Outsmarting the tree rats (squirrels) around my house is a full time job. This past spring I hit on a new idea. When I plant a container I invert an empty wire hanging basket over the container and the plant gets sun and can be watered but the squirrels can't dig in it. Another idea: I bring in a lot of plants to "over winter" under lights in my garage. I have so many that it is hard to reach my hand under the lights (4 shop lights) to the middle for watering. So I bought a pump sprayer with a long wand and it works great! In late winter I add a little liquid Dawn detergent, few drops, to each gallon of water and not only does the soil get wet easier but the worms that are waiting to hatch into distructive pets just don't hatch. Don't know what it costs me to run those four shop lights all winter but I don't care. It is a small price to pay to be able to "garden" every weekend in the garage. Many people have mentioned that they mark their outdoor plants with a "permanent Sharpie". In my experience there isn't a "permanent Sharpie", they all fade and quickly too. A grease pencil/china marker or expensive "no fade" garden center marker are the only markers I have found that won't disappoint you by fading. Eight years ago I decided to learn about gardening so I tapped into my local library. I checked out nearly every book they had on gardening and learned so much. The Gardenweb forums are also a wealth of information and entertainment. There is always something new to learn and I appreciate all of you who take the time to write in your ideas. One last idea from me...I keep a small notebook on my computer table and jot down any idea I find that's new and I will want to try. Little pieces of paper get lost but I always know where my notebook is and also use it when I order "on line" so I will remember the name of the company and the order date. Tina or Trowelgal

I am running an AMD 5 core processor and not had any issues with it, Its really a 4 core chip with a video processor included. I prefer the Intel processors, but my new Acer Desktop came with the AMD chip. I suppose that cost was the reason. I hung on to XP sp3 as long as i could and then changed to Win 7 Professional in the new computer. There was a learning curve, but Win 7 has proven to be a good operating system. The main issue, in crossing the boundary from the X86 architecture to the upgraded system, was that I lost the use of several old favorite programs. One of these was a sketching/drafting program. Since I have retired, I can not justify the cost of updating the old programs. I kept my old computer to run those.

sandyslopes - we don't really grow that far apart geographically although we are at a higher elevation and we can only grow tomatoes successfully in a GH. Have you ever tried Brandy Boy Hybrid? We grow Brandy Boy for taste and also because it is very prolific. It is still a Burpee exclusive so you have to get seeds through Burpee or Burpee's outlets. If you like the good old heirloom tomato tangy taste (not sweet) - you may want to try the variety. I read on another thread that you sold your condo and are currently renting while waiting for your build to begin. I hope you don't mind my asking why you sold your condo so early in the process Thankfully, we could easily cover two mortgages but that wasn't the reason. Our market in FL was hot last year and the year before and with the election etc. we felt it was better to sell when we knew the market was hot, rather than wait. Additionally in our downtown area, there is a tremendous amount of building going on. Seven new condos are going up around us and the general rule is people prefer new even though those familiar with our area, know that our building is one of the most desirable and well run in the city. Plus with all the new condo's going up, we think there's going to be a glut on the market. We also lucked out that we were able to rent one of the condos in our building that didn't sell, so moving was relatively easy.

Just a thought. Is it possible that there's nothing wrong with the browser, per se...but opening the link is being blocked on purpose by your anti- malware program...or Win itself...indicating that the link isn't safe??? Perhaps you security settings are set on High...allowing for very limited access to links...especially those received via email.

Other than that...I agree about making one or the other of your browsers the default browser. I have Win 7.1 and elect to use Firefox rather than IE so I've made FF my default browser which can be done either through Control Panel>Internet Options...or Control Panel>Default Programs.

On my PC with Windows 10:

Control Panel - Internet Options.. as with earlier Windows versions, takes you to the settings and preferences pages of Internet Explorer only, the same thing you get to clicking on Internet Options when in the program itself. There's nothing there that relates to other browsers.

Control Panel- Default Programs....as with earlier Windows versions, multiple steps will take the user to a page where very granular and (for a entry level user) very specific and likely confusing settings can be changed for defaults and protocols. The possibility and ease for someone bumbling around to do real damage to behavior by unknowingly making undesirable changes in this area is high.

My suggestion, to check a box in Settings of the desired browser to make it the default one, is very simple and is most unlikely to cause unwanted and unexpected consequences.

IE is set as the default browser. Still having the problem, which I never had before. Really strange. I am over my initial irritation. Just rolling with the punches. Now, which I click on a link in a newsletter which goes to a blank white page in IE with only a string (as shown above) at the top which is in black, I just copy the relevant info, for example: http://www.favesouthernrecipes.com/Other-Southern-Favorites/Simple-Prosciutto-Wrapped-Stuffed-Peppers, and paste it in the address bar and get the correct info. Just an extra unnecessary step.

Put Chrome or Firefox as your default browser. Get IE off. That's where the problem is.
