Birds and other mobile features in the garden 2017 #2
Comments (80)Yuck. I thought swarming ants were the same as flying ants. Maybe there are multiple varieties. They used to come to one corner of our garage, but the exterminator discouraged that behavior. Time to buy sugar ant traps - one good warm rain and they pop in. Look who made the front page of our local paper when looking for more bird food. Not my house. Good looking fellow. And after hearing the hawks flying low for a number of days carrying branches over our house, I saw her fly into the nest to sit on her babies-to-be. This is as close as I can get 2 yards away without bothering her. That's her tail. Must be the red-shouldered hawk. Red-tail hawk flying over our house. Here is a red-shouldered hawk out back scanning for food. Red-shouldered in our yard grocery shopping. Also in our yard checking her grocery list-to-be. A bit of a rest in a maple. Comments (81)Grabbed the camera and it needs new batteries. (I don't like how often my Canon Power Shot sx150 needs new batteries.) Finally! A mama turkey and 10 chicks about the size of morning doves. They stayed in one spot for quite some time then started to stroll along. Mama found something in the tall weeds that must have been yummy. Several chicks ran over. We also had two male cardinals this morning. A very unusual sight for us but my husband was looking out the window at the right time. I usually hear the whip-poor-will around 4:15am. Not this morning though when my husband was also awake too early and would have liked to have heard it. There's a hummingbird around but I have just planted Scarlet Runner beans on a trellis next to our favorite viewing window. I wonder how much food is out there for him....See MoreBirds and other mobile features in the garden 2019 #4
Comments (72)Bluebirds stopped outside my window then they took control of the bath. Totally disrupted my trip to the grocery store, and 189 pictures later, I have to decide whether to pay for Flickr Pro or not because I've reached my 1,000 picture limit on a free account. We'll see. Some really good shots, a good moment-by-moment story, but until I can find a photo sharing website, here are a couple of shots from this morning. Not sure how he got doves to swim like ducks, but anything is possible... Jane - who has lots of pictures to process....See MoreBirds and other mobile features in the garden 2020 #2
Comments (87)Now that I've finally gotten my GW links back instead of Houzz I can enjoy the photos. Houzz links have very small photos and it takes TOO LONG to enlarge each one individually. GW photos are already large. I missed many lovely earlier photos. It's is SUCH FUN to see all the events in your yards. I now have much better hummingbird activity than ever before. I'm wondering if it is all the jewelweed from last year they remember. I did get to see something fascinating, a hummingbird dance. I think it was most likely mating. Quite mesmerizing to see him fly in his arc pattern back and forth. I never saw the female as he was facing me and she was too well hidden. Swallowtail butterflies have been around. No monarchs, which is good because my Asclepias is only just over 2' high. It emerges very late, but it certainly takes off afterwards. Many birds, and a black-capped chickadee might have built nest outside of our bathroom window in a decorative, but still correctly sized, birdhouse I left up all winter. I'm waiting to see if they started a nest and then decided to move it, or if they are still in there. Don't have the guts to look inside with a flashlight. Keep the wonderful photos coming! And, corunum, if we are lucky because DA brings nature closer to us, then you are indeed our DA!...See MoreRelated Professionals
