What kind of glue might be on vintage wood carvings?

These interesting carvings must have come off a large piece of furniture or perhaps some built in trim. The biggest one is about 6 inches, so what ever it was, must have been large.

I plan to clean them up and hang them on the wall. I do not want to strip them, just clean them up and touch up the chips with some stain.

Step one is removing the very gunky glue that is around the pegs that originally attached them to “whatever it was”. It’s thicker than the photo shows. There’s some kind of grey splotches too: not paint.

I’m not sure what to use to try to get this off. I’ve seen similar glue on other antiques. It’s yellow, and slightly translucent, and very hard. It will not chip off with a razor blade.

Ideas that will remove the glue, and not remove the stain? Thanks.
