Decorating around existing elements or where you are going?
Comments (20)LOL at the comments about not being a 20 day renovator after the Cote de Texas blog entry. I'm definitely a percolator, but also like capitalizing on my energy level when I'm still feeling enthused and excited about a new space. I've been poring over the pics I have, although they aren't great...trying to figure out what exactly we're going to do. Paint the stained trim? Leave the tongue in groove ceiling or paint it? You name it. I do like the bright grassy green with the blues in the photo above. Nice and fresh. If I could find the right curtains that would be a possibility. If I remember correctly the blue in the carpet is somewhat close to the color of that sofa. I would share pics if I had some good ones. I'm hoping to photograph things again once we close. I'll be back begging for advice. I am so torn about what to do with the big wood clad vaulted ceiling. Cozy but kind of oppressive. I'm going to live with it for a bit, take the curtains down (hung so they somewhat cover the windows right now by current owner) and see how much light really gets in there sans window treatments. We'll try working with it first, but the siren call to paint it is definitely there for me. I think it would transform the space. I'll be back begging for help on what to do in there before long! You all are such a helpful bunch. I've been here many times through the years with each move trying to glean ideas!...See MoreDecor Ideas needed- design around new metal loft bed
Comments (22)Hey, what is wrong with a Cheetos bag, especially from the perspective of a high schooler? LOL I think I would move the bed unit to the wall that the door is on. That way when you look into the room it isn't the first thing that you see, so that it overwhelms the space. Also, I think the wall it is on currently could be put to better use. Be sure you mount some kind of shelf up on the wall by the bed, so that he can put an alarm clock up there. You will want to mount a swing-arm lamp up on the wall so that he can read in bed and not have to get down to turn off lights. Have a comforter, not a bedspread, for ease of making the bed. This bedding from Penney's might be perfect: stan comforter I would get a drafting table or something along those lines, and put that in the corner where the windows all meet. That will give him great light for working on schoolwork and puzzles. Then the two seating pieces can be down that wall and into the opposite corner a bit near the closet door. Maybe a inexpensive small plastic or RTA table between the two seating pieces. I would do the orange as a stripe that runs around the room, as wide and at the same level as the space between the bottom of the bunk and the back support brace on the bed unit (about desk height. That should put it just above about 30 inches at the bottom, so just above chair rail height. Behind the desk in that area, instead of just an orange stripe, make it orange-painted corkboard or bulletin boards so that he has a place to hang stuff related to school and other reminders, a calendar, etc. I would look for other ways to bring in the orange, like painting the fam blades, a couple of throw pillows in a wild print that includes the blues and oranges, orange frames on artwork or photos. You could also consider adding orange stitching lines to your denim walls, done every so many inches to mimic the stitching on denim jeans. Oh, and I don't think a 14x14 room is small at all. Our younger son had a similar unit in his room when younger, and that space was 10.5x11 with 8 ft. ceilings. Didn't overwhelm that room at all. More room than two people have in the typical college dorm room, too. Looks like you have had fun and done a great job on the walls!...See MoreDecorating a new home around a Swedish Tile stove
Comments (63)@lindsey - stenciling is definitely on the list: Maybe even some freehand painting. Though I suspect it would be easy to go overboard with either or both, as well. And that board is lovely! @lyfia - I'm actually not sure that bow window will even stay just yet - financial constraints will necessitate certain tweaks to the plan. Really, he only sketched in a bit of furniture to help me grasp scale and what WOULD fit in the spaces. Since in the first iteration, I REALLY didn't get how big the plan was, and we ended up having to downsize it quite a bit. I agree, I do like to be able to look out windows, too. The tile stove will slide back from where he has it drawn, and get its own little niche, probably with some casing. We don't really have living room furniture for this space, so we'll be able to plan out a better layout when we shop for that. It's good to keep in mind, though! @beckysharp - that's a thought. I'll have to ask. I've been politely asked not to actually get vintage fixtures, as they can't pass inspection (not UL approved). Though a modern fixture with a vintage shade is fine. I've been doing some scouring of Etsy, Ebay, and local shops for those, as well as cabinet and door knobs and hardware....See MoreHow to decorate around a check couch and not look country?
Comments (96)Nice room. Looks inviting as is. Getting someone to do upholstery work is expensive. A local auto/window and interior fabric repair place might know others that will sew covers for home furnishings from whom you might get additional estimates. Like the secretary angled in the corner. Would probably consider removing the kitchen/dining objects and replacing them with items more living room oriented -- framed photographs of places or people and/or other family treasures; then, since the doors have glass, close them. Like the niche near the door with the vertical art. Would want a snake plant in the pot on the plant stand near the window. Solid colors for throw pillows and other fabric furnishings -- unless you have a very specific theme you particularly like such as geometric design or floral or forest or beach. Larger lamp shade for the table lamp -- white for all shades. Probably full curtains or drapes rather than cafe curtains. Use mini blinds inside the window frames for privacy/light control and curtain or drape panels on a wider than window rod that will cover the side frame of the window with your sheer curtains in between or on an inner rod....See Morebeckysharp Reinstate SW Unconditionally
