Fridge landing gap across entry to pantry

How would a fridge landing be that is across a 32" gap (pantry doorway - open no actual door) to the side? 36 inch all fridge.

I am looking at a layout option that would put the entry to the pantry just to the right of the fridge. The side landing zone would thus be the counter across a 32" opening. There is an island behind too but the island ends just before the fridge and the seating is at that end so I think the island is a less good landing for prep stuff than the counter across the pantry doorway. Although things like condiments and beverages would go right to the island seating.

Do you think that would work? If an island behind works why wouldn't a 3 foot gap to the side work just as well? Or does side landing need to be directly next to fridge?
