Best way to get low maintenance economical showy annuals, part sun

Can you guys give me the low down? Is there any easy way to achieve showy seasonal color? Seeds? Annuals? Bulbs? Self-sowers? Perennials?

I am willing to do prep work, amend soil etc. providing the amount would decrease each year, and it could be done between October and April. Need low maintenance during the growing season.

I used cold hardy annuals the past 3 years, they did well, annual dianthus either survived or came back for nicely early color, but looked ratty by the end of the second year.

I have about 100 sq ft that is part sun, a few weeds, generally on the acidic side, medium moisture, not the best soil.

The other areas total 300 sq ft on a sunny slopes, forever weedy. Access difficult, but not impossible. We tried seeds here, but seedlings were pulled as weeds.

We are mid century complex. I am trying for contemporary / modern-ish, but that is secondary to low maintenance and showy.

Thank you for reading. April
