Although raspberries are self-pollinating (you don't NEED another variety), they can produce slightly better (more/bigger/flavorful) fruit with another variety present. I believe it's similar with most blueberries, but not all... what's your variety? As for how many raspberry plants to get, it really doesn't matter as they will spread like crazy. If you plant just single bare root plants (single cane) 3 feet apart, within 3 years, the bed will have full filled in. If it's not contained, it will have taken over much of the surrounding area. I'm not much of a grape grower yet, so I'll let someone else answer that. -Glenn

how big a space.. and is there an option to put something different in between??? in the country.. as a collector ... why not plant two.. and learn to enjoy the differences ... since i might plant them side by side.. 20 feet apart .... in suburbia with limited space .. why have two that are so similar ... spaced 10 feet apart ... so i dont recall your space ... so i dont know what to tell you about the wisdom of such ... i do not know about flower timing.. at my first house.. the funeral home neighbor had 150 feet of viburnum ... it was a great.. green sight block.. and otherwise boring as heck ... and on their property ... i was glad it was there.. i was glad it was not mine.. and but for the variegated version ... i dont really see the utility of such .... ken heres the variegated one .. the flowers stink to high heaven.. and who knows when it flowers.. that is not the point of this one ... why would you opt for two that are similar.. :

You don't say where you live which would be helpful. If your area is mild enough for rosemary to overwinter outdoors then it will need quite a big space to grow. Think in terms of giving it 3 - 4 feet width. If you pus your sage too close the rosemary will over shadow and eventually overgrow it. The advice on mint from BioTomato is good. Mint is best kept separate because it spreads. It also like more moisture than the other two.

I think it might help if I link to the article I was referring to b'c there are many many variables that are involved with the statistics of cross pollination, etc. and while I could discuss them, there's no reason to b/c the article does an excellent job of doing so. That link is below. I also encourage folks to look at the articles in the FAQ's before they post b/c some of the most asked questions here at GW in this Forum are answered in some of those articles. Which is why they were written in the first place. ( Smile) The search feature is at the bottom of the page and sometimes you have to use different words to find something, that I know. And Google is your friend if all other sources don't tell you what you want to know. Just a bit of history here. Initially tomatoes were discussed in the vegetable Forum but it got to the point that that Forum was being clogged up with tomato questions, so Spike, the original owner of GW, started this tomato Forum and at the same time put up the Pest and Disease Forum as well as the photo Gallery and the Seed Exchange, which is supposed to be an exchange for tomato seeds only. Now I see more and more pest and disease questions being asked in this general discussion Forum rather than the Pest and Disease Forum, and I don't know why. I haven't been to the PEst Forum in a long while and that b'c I spent many years there, along with a few others, answering questions and doing so for sometimes several hours each day. I figure I've made my contribution as far as pests and diseases go and it's time for others to step up, learn from others and share.
