Blueberries, Raspberries, and Grape Vines... How many of each?

I recently purchased one grape vine, one blueberry bush, and one raspberry bush for my yard. I read on one website that I would need to have 2 of each of these plants in order for them to pollinate and produce fruit... Is this true? Will I need to get a second plant for EACH of these, or just to blueberries? Thanks a bunch!

Oh, and any other helpful hints on these plants would also be greatly appreciated.

Although raspberries are self-pollinating (you don't NEED another variety), they can produce slightly better (more/bigger/flavorful) fruit with another variety present. I believe it's similar with most blueberries, but not all... what's your variety? As for how many raspberry plants to get, it really doesn't matter as they will spread like crazy. If you plant just single bare root plants (single cane) 3 feet apart, within 3 years, the bed will have full filled in. If it's not contained, it will have taken over much of the surrounding area. I'm not much of a grape grower yet, so I'll let someone else answer that. -Glenn

Grapes are all self fruitful. Blueberry is the only one that might need another variety. Even there you will likely be fine with one.

Joe: Mainly there is cane and spur pruning. Most can be grown cane pruned. A few yield better spur pruned. And spur pruning is cheaper and easier for commercial growers. I've grown dozens of varieties of table grape all by cane pruning. Silent's vine right now is cane pruned. He has saved one cane of last years growth in each direction. Next year he could convert to spur by leaving what's there now and about 3-4 buds on each shoot that arises this year. If he wants to continue cane pruning he'd remove as much as possible of those two current canes and save two or more of this summers canes that arise near the base of current canes. how many grape plants per arbor?

I should mention that the arbor is 45" wide, 85" high, 25 deep. I am also in the Boston area so if you have any suggestions on beter grapes (aside from the Venus and Jupiter) for my area, I am all ears. My hubby loves Concords but I hate them!!

Hi Weeper- I'd stay away from "Fall Gold" if you could. (I've been posting a lot of the same advice lately, so hopefully the other readers will forgive me). There are only 3 yellow varieties that are ever talked about: 'Anne' which is arguably the best tasting variety of raspberry that is out there... very large berries, but not a very productive plant. 'Kiwi Gold' which has a unique and good flavor, and is extremely vigorous. And 'Fall Gold' which doesn't have any of the positive attributes of the other two. If you look at my 'My Page', you'll see that I'm growing Anne and Kiwi Gold, but I have never grown 'Fall Gold' simply because the posts here on this forum are always poor. My only hesitation with recommending Anne and KG is your zone 2b/3a. I don't have any experience with what will and won't grow up there, but given a choice, I'd take Anne or KG over FG any day. Yep, I do have a Regents serviceberry (Saskatoon), but for some reason, the berries always turn black and shrivel up. O'well. Good luck, -Glenn

What about redcurrants? These will do well in a pot culture and can also be grown as cordons - a very versatile and tasty currant. Blueberries are another possibility but it must be kept wet - really wet, and prefereably not with tap water either (complete lime haters, ph 4.5). I may try them again with a seep hose directly from one of my water butts but if watering is not a problem, they are also very good plants as well as being quite stunningly ornamental. Yep, there are smaller, more upright blackberries, as well as loads of hybrids between blackberries and raspberries but I think it would be almost impossible to grow raspberries or most blackberries in pots because the cane renewal requires several new canes being produced every season and they tend not to grow close enough to the original crown. Finally, vines can, and are, very successfully grown in pots - the trick is in the pruning - it is OK to grow them as a really tight standard with a minimal framework. Again, they are also good on any training system. They are vigorous so you have to be firm, but definately more doable than the berries. Oh yeah, blackcurrants are also brilliant in pots - especially the smaller (but very prolific varieties like Ben Sarek). I am mad for fruit and grow as much as I can at my allotment.

I have 7 blueberries, 3 grapes and a variety of raspberries. They're pretty much for myself as my wife eats little fruit.

The blueberries you can bake with or freeze, so 7 is not too much, I believe.

I haven't harvested any grapes yet. But I got one white, one red and one blue/black.

My raspberries don't yield a lot as they are in shade. So, I use the in ice cream and toppings.

It is better to select a blueberry plant that blooms at the same time as the one you already purchased for cross pollination. What is the name of the blueberry you picked up?
