Is The Dark Lady hardier than WS2000?
Comments (10)Hi Kitty I have both of these roses and I consider them equally hardy, but remember I'm zone 5 which may make a difference for you. Both are tip hardy in my zone, so I can't imagine they wouldn't be at least root hardy for you, at least with protection. I read your other thread about the WS2000 dying, and I agree with folks that suspected your Minnesota Tip protection might have stressed that plant out. In general, I find Austins are happiest when left alone in the roots, and pruned like mad in the branches when they get too lanky for your tastes. Between the two, WS2000 is vastly the more prolific bloomer than the Dark Lady, though I like the darker color of the latter better. Still, if you prefer WS2000 and it survived several winters already with you, there's no reason not to get another plant of that variety, just let it be and do surface protection instead if you're concerned about the canes over the winter. And yes, by all means, bury that graft deeply or go own root for protection. Cynthia...See MoreNot tiny, and bigger than lady bugs...
Comments (30)I'm been wondering why I've never seen Orb Weaver's out here in Eastern WA...until after your post LOL! I went about the beds this morning checking seedlings and I came across an Orb style web I found attached between my Chives and Aster laevis, but couldn't find the spider. I know it's an Orb Weaver's web though! I'll go back out this evening and see if I can get a picture. Back home in ND and in NE we had them by the gazillions and I used to be extremely frightened of them (all spiders actually). These ones were the big black and yellow ones.... Given the fact that I live with Hobo Spiders here I've become more desensitized over the years LOL! Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreMore Men Than Ladies
Comments (41)Ciao Martin, you talk about the canning your nonna had, yes, that is something I still do and learned from Nonna and zia Assunta. I at the time have 19 quarts of homemade macaroni sauce, I have 23 small pints of Tomato paste, about 10 pints of fried peppers and garlic, and soup base with lots of carrots, onions, garlic and celery. I tried to get a quick jump on all of this as my garden (vegetable) is producing quickly all at once. This morning i canned some fresh figs that I picked around sunup, they are from my Paradiso and my Peters Honey trees. cold packing them now. I will probably get around 100 quarts of just macaroni sauce this year. Sometimes I go to the Amish around the area and have to buy more Tomatoes when my small garden is done to fill my personnal quota. You figure we eat pasta easily now only about 4 days a week, so you need alot of sauce. I also grow alot of flowers and Olive trees. I grow mainly the flowers we had alot of back in Italy,, Bougainvillea, Cappero (Capers) which I can in Pizza sauce, Oh thats what I have to do yet, geraniums, Oleander, Italian Jasmine ect. I also have 2 Carob trees growing which my nonna used to chew like it was gum or something. I do have an affinity for the Jasmine and the Bougainvillea though. Yes just about all the gardening I learned from her and her sisters. There was NEVER a weed in their gardens. They would go out and talk to everything, and Pick pick pick weeds, everything was groomed perfectly. It is funny now, me heading into middle age, I find myself doing just what she did. Funny how history repeats itself. Drying figs outside you mentioned was also a fond memory for me. All the figs drying everywhere. Even though my aunt got a dehydrator for Christmas, she hasn't used it yet!! she still drys the figs in the sun. Ciao Maggie...See MoreIvanka as First Lady ...
Comments (169)d_gw, this was what you said. Many people and companies that excel financially do not do so because of their continued innovation or skills. They do so because their current wealth and connections and political influence allows them to successfully manipulate our laws and systems to their advantage. This bold part is what I disagree with. I don't think that MANY people or companies excel because of their connections. They excel because they have a good or interesting idea. Their connections can give them a boost, perhaps, in the form of allowing them to create future barriers to entry once they have created or cornered a market or to keep more of their tax dollars, but a company generally cannot become successful based on connections or government largess alone. That was my point. Should a company's ability to push through a favorable real estate regulation be acceptable even if the new giant office park lowers property values around the plot? I don't know the answer to that. If we cut back on government, this problem would largely be solved. The government should have basic rules in place that apply equally to everyone to protect property rights and protect free markets and shouldn't pass all these stupid laws and regulations that create barriers to entry and allow for rent seeking instead of innovation. This is a big government problem, through and through! Wouldn't it be nice if large swaths of tax accountants, lawyers and government administrators were no longer necessary and these folks could go do something else? YES> A thousand times yes. Let's figure out what it costs for the government to ESSENTIAL functions (military, and the things the constitution actually tells the government to do) and then figure out what percentage of income we need to tax people at to fund those functions without a deficit and do a flat tax as a percentage of income to raise the revenue, with low income people exempt. No exceptions, no loopholes, no incentivizing or penalizing behavior through the tax code! Then, government can require a certain percentage of income be given to a charity or charities of a person's choosing that aids people, science, or animals (no vanity projects and you cannot give to your own foundation unless you can provide clear and concrete proof of outside charitable work). People wouldn't fight so hard to get out of giving up their money if they could give it to things they care about instead of flushing it down the toilet (aka giving it to the gov)....See Morejustlinda
