Comments (3)I think Dolley must have been quite a pip.She is credited with saving the original Declaration of Independence when the Brits torched the White House. One thing I didn't know about her was that she was a very young widow with a child when she married James Madison. You know, until your thread Jan,I think I've always spelled her name without that "e."...See MoreNot tiny, and bigger than lady bugs...
Comments (30)I'm been wondering why I've never seen Orb Weaver's out here in Eastern WA...until after your post LOL! I went about the beds this morning checking seedlings and I came across an Orb style web I found attached between my Chives and Aster laevis, but couldn't find the spider. I know it's an Orb Weaver's web though! I'll go back out this evening and see if I can get a picture. Back home in ND and in NE we had them by the gazillions and I used to be extremely frightened of them (all spiders actually). These ones were the big black and yellow ones.... Given the fact that I live with Hobo Spiders here I've become more desensitized over the years LOL! Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreAny idea what this is, or more importantly how to propagate it?
Comments (11)Hi This type of setup is usually callled a riparium rather than a paludarium where the emphasis is on an animal rather than the plant. All are called terrariums the difference being the amount of water. and it's a very loose definition lol The theory is the fish will provide fert for the plant while the plant will clean the water and provide food for the fish. Sort of a miniature ecosystem. In this case the choices of plant and animal were good except that the Betta is a carnivore so obviously the plant cannot provide all the food for the fish. Also this type of fish requires oxygen from the atmosphere so the surface must always be open Spathphyllum will live in this situation for long periods of time as will the fish IF you keep in mind that it is not self sustaining.. Obviosly you can't fertilize normally nor can you allow the plant to grow excessively. there are many species of Spaths with varying degrees of water tolerance as well as growth habits obviously the taller species will become top heavy Good choices are dwarf types which can be supplemented with true aquatics depending on your light source. The longest lasting and most balanced are generally around 5 gallons kept at around 80 degrees with an ample light source. These types of plants are very easy to propagate if the plant is healthy enough to divide . Do you want to continue with water culture ?? What is your goal with the division?? i use Spaths extensively in my "marsh " garden mainly because they tolerate low light situations as well as eliminates the need for constant watering.. They certainly can be grown as a regular soil borne "houseplant" or garden plant if temps will allow . Terraria are fascinating ways to keep both plants and animals if you want to go in that direction?? gary...See MoreSpecialist vet visit cost more than my first car
Comments (49)There have been quite a few studies done showing that certain breeds are sensitive to ivermectin which is used in heartworm meds. Ivermectin toxicity affect certain breeds that may carry a genetic mutation. They were starting to see this first in collies and later other herding breeds, the Aussie is included in those susceptible breeds. I remember discussing this with my vet when we had a Sheltie/Aussie mix. Apparently they have a test for the genetic mutation these days. I live in an area where heartworm is simply not a problem. My dog is not on heartworm meds at all. I have discussed this with my vet and he sees no reason for me to put her on it unless we plan to take her to areas where it is a greater risk. Then I would be happy to have her tested and put on medication for the time period necessary. I have no fleas either but if she is out in parks and places where she meets others dogs I do use a dose of Frontline at the start of flea season. No reason to do flea treat in the dead of winter. A lot of things are pushed on clients by vets for one simple reason. They know people get lax in the care of their animals. If they say recommend something for the season the client may forget next year so it's easier to put the dogs on heart worm year round. Of course this doesn't apply to people who travel a lot with their dogs or live in mosquito zones year round. By advocating for yearly vaccines they know they will at least see the dog once a year since people bring them in for annual health check ups or worse wait until they are extremely ill.
