What's everyone doing in SoCal?
Comments (8)In the process of harvesting Caigua, Yacon, Kiwano, and Taro from my friend's garden plot we are working on. Oca should be ready to harvest soon as well. Self seeding dandelion is starting to germinate, excellent lettuce taste on a good portion of the naturalized dandelion greens (no bitterness detected). Found lettuce to be finicky and prone to pests, dandelion greens are a great alternative (healthier too). Waiting for more self seeded purslane and german chamomile now. Goal is to get enough self seeding salad greens naturalized, so sizable harvest can be done any week of the year. Germinating Garlic bulbs, Jakfruit (Have a couple sprouting out despite the cooler temps). Trying to germinate Katuk (Sauropus androgynus) and Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica). Waiting for a number of Opuntia Ficus-indica to root, from accessions ordered from GRIN (some promising fruit and nopales selections). Ordering way to many plants to add to the collection :). Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis), Ulluco (Ullucus tuberosus), and many other medicinal herbs which are adaptogens. Fruiting cacti collection is doing well, just trying to insure they are all happy with the cooler temps and increase moisture. Tropical fruit and spice collection is growing unfazed by recent cooler temps, Brewster Lychee and Julie mango flushing new growth. Dwarf Orinoco bananas almost ready for harvest. Cara Cara oranges close to harvest. In ground Hass and Reed avocados loaded with developing fruit. Need to figure out what I am going to germinate in the next few months... To many seeds and plants and not enough time besides the weekends....See MoreWhat are you planting this season?
Comments (40)My list is down from previous years, but I am getting 6 more elderberries; Sierra, Bonus, Collins, Darrow, Chandler blueberries (maybe more if my Southern varieties perished during this harsh winter); Tulamagic, Reveille, and Autumn Britten red raspberries. I'm adding a 100 ft row of black rasps: Jewel, MacBlack, Bristol, Logan, and I'll add another 200 ft of blackberries--Osage and Ouchita. I have 250 feet of TC's that I'm not happy with. They mature so late that they often are lost or severely damaged by heat. I'm also tired of enlessly pruning them. If I like these new ones, they will take at least part of the TC's place. I'll add a couple more Poorman gooseberries and a Jeanne and Black Velvet. No new black currants this year, but I am adding 2 more Rovadas and Von Tets. I finally succumbed to curiosity and ordered 3 grafted paw paws. I really don't know why as I am blessed w/loads of good wild ones. Finally, 2 more O'Henry and Indian Free peaches and a Pineapple pear. The latter was an impulse that I kind of regret. I may keep it out of the orchard and use it as landscape. I've added another dozen Nanking cherries to put in the landscape also. I also keep losing rhubarb and need 20 more Canada reds. I wouldn't mind another thousand asparagus either but will wait. I'm starting to intrude into my 5 acre veggie patch because I'm getting too old to keep that much up and demand for fruit is always high. I've ripped out all nects and sweet cherries and am ready to yank out the apricots as well....See More2016 November picture time!! Please, lets' see them.
Comments (139)Thanks Laura and Mike! Mike, yes, we do love Christmas movies around here as well. Thank you, happy holidays to you and yours as well. You know, I was THISCLOSE to buying tiny little Christmas lights for some of the citrus trees. We went to a local hardware store because my daughter's band will be marching in a Christmas parade and the kids were encouraged to decorate their instruments. We bought my daughter a stand of battery operated, tiny Christmas lights to decorate her sax with. I wanted some for my little trees as well! I would have to hire someone to do it, but if I decorate our palm tree, I'll send you a pic! I still have an hour and a half before midnight strikes into December, so I wanted to share some pics of some Meyers (grocery store) here in your November pics before I forget. They come from a local vendor, and they are SO big that I even questioned if they were Meyers! I know that they can get big, but these were huge! To me, they didn't seem "smooth" enough to be Meyers, but the produce guy noticed me gawking over them and assured me they purchased them as Meyers....See MoreWinter Pest Frustrations
Comments (26)Sammers I too am very sorry!! But not all hope is lost! Is it too early to leave them outside now Sammers? When I was once in the dark about getting rid of scale, I am talking a HUGE mass of them all over my Ponderosa Lemon and Olive Tree, I used what Tom suggested and what Gardengal suggested all at once..Let me tell you when I say I got completely rid of them in just a month spraying once a week. I brought mine outside and spray and watered them in. I have never seen them since. Try both! When you get them outside, spray every tree down with the 'All Seasons Dormant oil and then water them all in with the Bayer. That did the trick for mine for sure! I never threw a tree away to pest, because for every pest there is a simple solution if given the right advice and using the right products.. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-BONIDE-32-OZ-RTU-HOSE-END-ALL-SEASONS-SPRAY-HORTICULTURAL-DORMANT-OIL-213/172149772721?epid=1000020153&hash=item2814ed11b1:g:osMAAOSwI3RW-VqX...See Moresummerlx
