For jig Saw Puzzle lovers, a great idea, but....

Got this puzzle for something to occupy DH while he recuperates from surgery. It is meant for those on the go, even for air travel. The finished puzzle is about 10 x 8 and 500 pieces, so those pieces are small. The frame is sturdy plastic, has a slide out tray on each side to sort pieces and a clear plastic cover that slides in at to top of the frame to cover and for transport the unit even while the puzzle is in progress. Even has an easel to clip on the back to stand the unit up for ease in working on it. Additional puzzles are supposed to be available sans frame.

ALAS!!! the company is out of business. I did find a puzzle for it (no frame) on Amazon, but at 3 times what I paid for the whole unit.

DH agreed, a great idea...he said it was somewhat difficult as puzzles go, but it kept him busy for a couple days. That is the easel shown below the frame.

I'm in full agreement about the jigsaw puzzle apps that can be downloaded. Quite fun and not messy1

Oh my goodness those are tiny pieces I would go cross eyed . Glad he enjoyed it .

I have cats, so jigsaw puzzles are a no-go here. However, I've downloaded a free puzzle app for my iPad. I really enjoy that. Perhaps that's an option?

Well my DH wins the prize. He hasn't divorced me or threatened to take away my spade, yet. I don't know if all of you saw the photos that Jim (Idiothe) posted of Sheila and I with our kayaks and bikes and the car completely loaded with hostas? Well in order to do that we loaded all our gear in our boats. It is my hubby's car. (both our names are on it, but it is his vehicle 98% of the time.) I drive the used Mommy van that gets used as a truck for hauling mulch and whatever. But the kayak rack is mine, and I can't load boats on my van due to a bad shoulder. So..... he is very particular about his car. He hates me putting the rack on, he will not drive on gravel, etc. So with my bad shoulder, and the heavy boats, I couldn't lift my end of Sheil's up very well. So the J cradles kept twisting and falling down. I finally found a man to help us. We finally got it loaded, made it home... and there are dents all over the top of the car. Bad dents, like really big hail. :( Like will never come out. I feel awful, I do. Whats done is done, and he isn't holding it against me. But he is so sad. And I am too. But I did get all my hostas home! So he wins the hosta hubby of the year award. I need to get those trophies made, don't I? Anyone want to nominate their Wife for the Hosta Wife of the year award?

Just make sure that it's either not too big, or if it is, that a human could get in. If your dog were ill, injured, or worse, you might have to get them out of there. I would make it the size of an appropriate dog crate- big enough for them to be comfortable; small enough to reach in. You also might want or need to clean it from time to time. Now you've got me thinking about where I'm going to put one in our yet-to-be-built new home!

John, I'm not sure what spindle type it is.......however I don't think they had R-8 back then. It does have an indexable boring head mounted in it currently, so who knows it may have been retrofitted. Or it could be a larger Morse Taper. Either way, my preliminary search into tooling indicated that I should be able to convert up to a more current standard if I want to (and can afford to do so!). Thanks, David

Thought some more about this overnight. My dad was a dentist. Also built his own dental office. Corian everywhere. I have health issues, including a couple of surgeries. When you go to the doctor, or the hospital, Corian everywhere. Until I read this thread, I never really thought about why. I worked in a hospital 40 years ago, if I recall correctly, stainless steel was the thing then. It's all about keeping things clean. We have hard water, as do most people in the USA. Did not realize that hard water affects stone. I have never cut directly on a countertop, it will ruin your knives. I have never put a hot pot on a countertop and have no desire to do so. We do put hot pots in the sink, pour boiling water in the sink, so I am going to need a steel or enamel sink. Want a farmhouse sink anyway. This has been a very thought provoking discussion. Learned a lot.

My thanks to the two above posters who took the time to comment, but I would much rather be able to run my hands through the pieces, even pick a few up off the floor if need be. Using an app or puzzling on line just isn't the same. Yes, I am one of those old folks who is resisting all this techy stuff. LOL

I hear you lgmd. It's like the difference between reading online and holding the book/magazine/paper. Don't have to be old to appreciate that difference.

That's a very clever idea. I love jigsaw puzzles, but hate losing pieces & how much space 1 in progress can take up.

Does your DH feel the same about tech as you do?

I have a game app called Jigsaws Galore that is pretty awesome - you can make your own puzzles from graphics & photo files. Never lose a piece again & pieces 'stick', once they're in the correct place - even if not connected to anything. It's customizable on many levels: piece size & number, shape, background colors, etc.

I have mine(for Mac OS) through Big Fish Games, where you can try it for 1 hour's play for free, but you can also get it direct from the developer as well...

Carol, my dh is even more resistant to all the techy stuff than I am. We have just one desk top computer (no lap top, etc) and like it just fine to share our time on it.

That is an interesting site you posted, lots of options to consider.

I use the Magic Puzzles app on my android tablet and love it. Just yesterday I was walking through the jigsaw puzzles in a local store and thought about how I'll probably never put very many physical puzzles together anymore because I love my app so much. Carol, like yours, mine will allow you to make puzzles of your own pictures. On mine, the pieces snap together, but not to the place they will stay. You have to solve that. It is a free app, but you can buy sets of puzzles. You don't need to though, as you can purchase them with points earned by putting puzzles together. The reason I chose this particular program was because of the few accesses that they required.
