SMEG Speed Oven vs Miele Speed Oven
Comments (14)Kind of puts the parts-and-service issue in perspective.... Smeg obviously trying to crack the US market now; whether they'll succeed we don't know. As for the aforementioned Smeg dishwashers rebranded as GE (and later DCS), that's how Bosch and LG got started in the US too. Bosch entered the US market in the '90s with only three products (all high-end dishwashers) and we all know what happened since. LG used to just rebrand their microwave ovens for others (and sell a few themselves under the Goldstar brand); it took less than a decade for them to become a major contender in all appliance product categories. Samsung didn't sell any major appliances here until about a decade ago under their own name. Meanwhile, several once-big US manufacturers have disappeared or been swallowed by bigger fish....See MoreSpeed / Combi Steam Oven Instead of Wall Oven?
Comments (13)I just linked to a picture I found online; however, my speed oven interior looks exactly like the picture. My cookies, not so sure..... Wall ovens, when they were introduced in the 1950s, were often really installed in a cutout in a wall. Nowadays they're almost always put in cabinets, but the term stuck. My Advantium 240 was installed in a new hole cut in the kitchen wall, reclaiming what previously was utterly unusable space above a staircase, which previously was open to its landing and 7 to 10 feet upwards, with sliding doors covering it. I reappropriated it for the kitchen in the adjacent room, as the bottom of that unreachable storage closet was only 50" above the kitchen floor. I would have preferred it a half foot lower, but free space in this tiny kitchen (which didn't have room for a dishwasher before renovation) was too good to pass up. As for how much I value the "regular" oven we're putting in, it too will have a drawer under it - and the oven itself is already under the counter. I got the smallest oven I could find - 24" wide, 24" tall - and it leaves room for a 6"h drawer underneath. I didn't want to waste space on an appliance that will rarely get used....See Moreadvice about a speed oven
Comments (9)What Austin and malabacat said. I love our Miele speed oven. We have the non-automatic programming one. I think, probably, the addition of the programs is more than a slight upgrade but counts perhaps for a qualitatively different machine. I didn't really know that when I bought the low-end -- it was more than we could afford as-is. But I love that we have it. The under-counter capability was the deal-maker for us and it works as promised. There's a little bit of hot-air venting underneath the top of the door, but it's not scalding, not dangerous for small passersby. You need a dedicated 220V line. The learning curve on the non-auto version is long but I've got a numch figured out now. dh thinks chicken cooked in it is better than either the grill or the gas stove. It is faster than other options, though not tons faster. I think it takes about 35 minutes for a 3+ bird or so, maybe 40 minutes since I always undercook it! But that's fast enough that by the time the table is set and stuff gets taken care of on arriving home, you can basically cook dinner from scratch without waiting unduly. It's fast-enough. Faster, basically, than me/life! It is a bit of a pain to clean -- that is, it's not *hard* to clean but I'm not sure it gets all that clean. There are little holes in the interior - probably that's a MW-necessity? And it's just sort of stained -- doesn't bother me, it's obviously not a health hazard and I don't hold tea parties in there. There's a bolt that holds the heating element on top in place that you can let down to get underneath it to clean -- that's good. One problem cleaning-wise is that it sits inside a 24" cabinet IIRC, and crumbs can drop between the door and into the cabinet but it's very difficult to reach those without removing the whole machine, which is *heavy*. So .... that's my biggest cleanliness complaint. If you do all of a meal's cooking in the one machine, you might want to use the MW after using the oven, which is problematic because the tray is hot. A silicon mat can help with that. With a little effort I was able to find cookie trays that exactly fit the interior - that's nice. Biggest and best advice I received was to build into your plans a very shallow drawer right underneath or to the side to receive the tray or rack you're not using. No one wants to schlep across the kitchen looking for those things and it's true, when they're all immediately there, it's an enormous help. I also built a second, slightly larger drawer for MW-safe glass containers underneath -- a big planning-plus, IMO. This machine is really impressive, IMO. Be careful of its glass tray -- they are very expensive to replace....See MoreI don't want to overdo by ovens! Need advice -Speed, Steam, Conv, etc.
Comments (16)@b Carey Funny you say that!!! I came close to doing that! But instead have decided to do a 30” fridge/over double freezer drawers (side by side) so the top of both units are fridge and the 2 drawers on both sides are freezer. This gives me about the same cu ft as the 36” column fridge. The 4 freezer drawers are plenty for me. (I also have a fridge/freezer drawers undercounted at coffee/smoothie bar that will stock frozen fruit and fresh veggies or almond milk for smoothies. Last minute change once I realized how small the cu ft on a 30” column is!!! So glad I compared to current one now. My current standard GE fridge/freezer is 15.7/9.7 cu. it would have only gone to 17/15 if I did 30”/30” but now with change it will be 21/10cuft. Hoping it’s a smart move!...See MoreBuehl
