SMEG Speed Oven vs Miele Speed Oven
Comments (14)Kind of puts the parts-and-service issue in perspective.... Smeg obviously trying to crack the US market now; whether they'll succeed we don't know. As for the aforementioned Smeg dishwashers rebranded as GE (and later DCS), that's how Bosch and LG got started in the US too. Bosch entered the US market in the '90s with only three products (all high-end dishwashers) and we all know what happened since. LG used to just rebrand their microwave ovens for others (and sell a few themselves under the Goldstar brand); it took less than a decade for them to become a major contender in all appliance product categories. Samsung didn't sell any major appliances here until about a decade ago under their own name. Meanwhile, several once-big US manufacturers have disappeared or been swallowed by bigger fish....See MoreTo speed oven, or not speed oven; THAT is the question
Comments (11)First of all, left-over food does not taste as good after MW-ing compared to warming it up on the stove or in the oven. IDK about nutritional value research but a friend of mine once did an experiment. What happens if you leave a baked or boiled potato on your counter *indefinitely*? It will spoil, will it not? He left a potato cooked in a MW on the counter. The potato did not spoil but disintegrated and he watched it to turn into small black pieces that were not rotten, just weird. Can anyone here interpret this fact? Does it mean that MW changes food structure? Anyway, I never cook in MW and only use it for reheating and - rarely - for defrosting food. I am now curious and I am going to repeat his experiment but this time, using a regular boiled potato as a "control", i.e., I'll leave two potatoes, one boiled and one MW'd, unrefrigerated and see what happens. I just need to get some conventionally grown potatoes as I'd feel sorry to do it with my expensive organic ones, LOL....See MoreAdvice on Speed oven or Micro
Comments (5)My research on speed ovens other than the Advantium ended quickly when I realized how much more expensive they were (ie, over $2000, some alot over). This may or may not be a factor for you. You should also know, in case you don't, that the GE installation instructions call for the Advantium to be installed no lower than 36" high. That means you can't put it in a base cab without possibly voiding the warranty. HOWEVER -- there are recent threads on this site discussing this, and it appears several people here have installed them in islands and base cabs and have been just fine-- and GE has honored the warranty. I would be careful anyway -- read the threads, talk to GE (document that call!), decide for yourself. My current kitchen plan calls for an Advanitum 120 to be installed in a 27" oven cabinet, but I fear this is driving up the cost of my cabs, and to make this work the only fridge I can by is the 30" Liebherr, which is narrower and alot more expensive--$3700--than the $2000 36" I had budgeted. (Liebherr fridges are another thread entirely ;) Now that I have gotten my cabinet estimate from my KD, and its $4k higher than her initial estimate, I am rethinking whether I need that Advantium so much after all. Anyway, those are my thoughts -- good luck....See MoreThermador speed oven (MC30WS) or other Speed oven recs?
Comments (24)We have a stack of a Miele CSO and a Miele SpeedOven in a tall cabinet. The SpeedOven is at about eye level. I love the combination and would absolutely recommend it, if you have the space and the budget. But I am sure I could easily adjust to having the SpeedOven under the counter. We have a traditional gas range, and it comes with an "undercounter" oven, of course. We use this oven quite frequently, because of its very powerful infrared broiler. And that requires close inspection of the food while it is in the oven. Only takes a couple of seconds to go from barely brown to catching on fire. If I can handle staring deep into my oven, I am sure I can handle a microwave at the same level. That placement is maybe not ideal, but every kitchen is an exercise in compromises; and this seems to be one of the less annoying ones....See MoreAustin B
