What vegetables do you grow and what style garden do you have?
Comments (15)I'm still in the process of digging my veggie garden, but next year I should be done part of it so that I can get started growing something. My garden is a very large raised bed, which I am dividing with paths into small, 3 1/2 ft wide beds that I won't need to stand on ever. With our heavy clay soil, anything to cut down on compaction will be good for the plants. In the center of my garden I plan to have a small circular bed with some roses growing in it. I plan to plant in blocks and rows; I like vegetable gardens to be ornamental as well as practical. This style of gardening is called a potager, and is supposed to be popular in europe. As for what I intend to grow: potatoes, different varieties lettuce, spinach, corn, zucchini, yellow summer squash, carrots, peas, beans, beets, broccoli and cauliflower from seed. I will use transplants for: tomatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, peppers, eggplant and pumpkin. I would also like to try cantaloupe and watermelon transplants, though I know they'll be iffy depending on the year. Lots of freezing, lots of canning, lots of fresh eating! Before I plant all of those, we do intend to insulate and went a corner in our basement for a root cellar as well. I'll have to wait and see what plants end up being too finicky (maybe cauliflower!) and get knocked off the list....See MoreWhat do you do with limoncello besides drink it?
Comments (16)Here is the recipe Annie is looking for. We made it at Peppi's back in 2009. Delicious! Limoncello-Mint Sorbet with Fresh Blackberries Ingredients 2 cups water 1 1/3 cups sugar 1/2 cup limoncello 1 cup fresh lemon juice (about 6 large lemons) 1/2 cup chopped fresh mint 2 cups blackberries Lemon slices (optional) Preparation 1. Combine first 3 ingredients in a saucepan over medium-high heat; bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat; add lemon juice and mint. Cover and chill. 2. Strain juice mixture through a sieve into a bowl; discard solids. Pour mixture into the freezer can of an ice-cream freezer; freeze according to manufacturer's instructions. Spoon sorbet into a freezer-safe container; cover and freeze 1 hour or until firm. Serve with blackberries; garnish with lemon slices, if desired. Note: If you don't want to use the limoncello, you can substitute 1/2 cup of prepared lemonade. Linda...See MoreWhat else do you grow besides......
Comments (177)Well, I like the variety but some could correctly point out I'm adding plants that may compete with my tangerine tree for space and nutrients. I think you have to consider what space your citrus needs and how much you may disturb its roots harvesting something else you may plant there. Ginger probably isn't a great choice since I will ultimately dig or pull up the ginger roots. I plant it on the north side of the tangerine so the ginger has plenty of shade....but it is very close to the tangerine's drip line. It's another very fun crop though so I think it's worth missing out on a few tangerines for the added ginger crop. The peppermint actually helps keep other weeds from germinating and growing in the planter...just by shading them out. It competes for nutrients too but I also love peppermint so no harm done!...See MoreNortherns: What else besides Citrus among your fruits?
Comments (38)The coffee plants have lovely leaves, and the persimmon tree looks beautiful with all of that ripened fruit on the tree. I have been looking into getting one and doing some research on different varieties and what would do well in a container but my space is limited . Tropic, what a lovely jackfruit plant. I hope you had a lovely time in India. I currently have figs, bananas, olives and pomegranate growing in containers. A few years ago, I had a couple of lovely coffee plants growing in containers under the shade of my tall banana trees in the gh, but they eventually struggled due to neglect on my part. Shhh..Don't tell my pomegranate that they are supposed to be deciduous.. They have kept most of their leaves throughout the winter and shed just a small percentage. The dwarf variety had set a few buds and blooms briefly during the middle winter months and last summer they did produce small fruit.....See MoreLaura LaRosa (7b)
