Do you drink coffee or tea?
Comments (34)Snookums, interesting find. But the abstract just says the researchers found small amounts of formaldehyde in commercially brewed and instant coffees in aqueous forms. It doesn't explicitly say anything about decaf coffee, and it certainly doesn't prove that formaldehyde is used to decaffeinate coffee (or rather, we can't discern that from the abstract.) As this report is 27 years old, I wonder why there has been no follow up or more extensive research if there is a formaldehyde issue. Too bad we can't read what's in the report to know if the coffees sampled were a broad spectrum of brands or even if it's an American study (brands readily available to us in our markets). I'd like to know if the study team postulated how the formaldehyde got into the coffee. Perhaps it occurs naturally? I found this in article via library online databases: "Natural carcinogenic and DNA damaging chemicals present in a cup of certified organic coffee (4) Aectaldehyde, benzaldehyde, benzene, benzo (a) pyrene, benzofuran, caffeic acid, catechol, 1,2,5,6-dibenz (a) anthracene, ethylbenzene, formaldehyde, furan, furfural, hydroquinone, d-limonene, 4-methylcatechol, styrene, toluene." ( Gold LS, Slone TH, Stern BR, Manley NB, Ames BN. Rodent Carcinogens: Setting Priorities. Science 258, 261-265, 1992., cited in "Organic Food Sales Increasing 20% Annually Last 20 Years," Hale, Jamie. McClatchy - Tribune Business News [Washington] 05 Nov 2009.) In researching, I thought this was interesting: "Another argument raised against formaldehyde as a human leukemogen [cause of leukemia] has been the presence of potentially significant amounts of formaldehyde or formaldehyde precursors in food. However, food is a complex mixture of chemicals. For example, coffee contains caffeine that would be metabolized to formaldehyde, but among the close to a thousand other chemicals components identified in coffee, some are antioxidants that might well have anticarcinogenic activities. It is difficult to predict the toxicological effects of simple mixtures, let alone mixtures that have thousands of chemicals nor can the possibility be ruled out that formaldehyde derived from food intake plays a role in the existing background incidence of leukemia." Comments (36)You know, I have to honest here and say I am very wary of reusing plastic glasses and plates. They scratch more easily than glass and ceramic, and are probably more prone to harboring bacteria. I don't use plastic cutting boards either for the same reason. I found this article from Ohio State regarding an experiment they did on dishwashing - "Dishes are not created equally -- compared to ceramic plates, steel knives, spoons, forks and plastic trays are prime growing spots for bacteria." http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/dishwash.htm Just saying....See MoreWhat else do you grow besides......
Comments (177)Well, I like the variety but some could correctly point out I'm adding plants that may compete with my tangerine tree for space and nutrients. I think you have to consider what space your citrus needs and how much you may disturb its roots harvesting something else you may plant there. Ginger probably isn't a great choice since I will ultimately dig or pull up the ginger roots. I plant it on the north side of the tangerine so the ginger has plenty of shade....but it is very close to the tangerine's drip line. It's another very fun crop though so I think it's worth missing out on a few tangerines for the added ginger crop. The peppermint actually helps keep other weeds from germinating and growing in the planter...just by shading them out. It competes for nutrients too but I also love peppermint so no harm done!...See Morebesides the dishes, what would you do to improve this kitchen?

Also removing the decorative valance above the sink. I'd like to see a curtain to bring in some color and softness ... and a matching /coordinating drape for the sliding glass door. Paint colors for walls? What color is predominant in your closet? Consider that for your walls. Everything you have is neutral colors ... I'd like to see a tile backsplash with some color and personality ... not plain white tile. Anything else we can do to put lipstick on our pig!!!! - Do those soffits contain ducts? Removing them would be a big (but not inexpensive) step. - If you remove the soffits, you could then replace the uppers with something taller. The cabinets you have now look to be in good condition, but the uppers look kinda squatty. Again, not an inexpensive fix. - Painting the cabinets won't be easy because they're oak /they have strong veining. - How about replacing that very basic door we see beyond the kitchen? - Replacing the countertops would go miles and miles towards updating the look. i think you need color. Agree. You have wood and white, and that gray mat doesn't count as "color". Try black Thonet chairs with cane seats. I don't know what kind of chairs those are, and I'm not a big fan of cane seats, but I think you need some non-basic chairs. I like the chairs you have now -- I have their first cousin -- but everything you have is so simple, you need something with a bit more personality. I'd pick a color and thread it through -- rug, chair seats, maybe a teapot or other visible accessory. Art on the wall from which the photos are taken? Agree with all of the above....See Moreannie1992
