Norway maples poison plantings underneath????
Comments (11)it is not a poison issue .... its a super competitor .. winning the battle for water and nutrients ... all maples are near impossible to garden under ... and norway are the absolute worst .. IMHO .... here is a pic from when the neighbor had to fix the septic ... just a generic maple... its no wonder nothing will grow under it ... the fact that you cant even grow the most invasive plant in the world under it.. grass ... is a fine indication that NOTHING else will grow there ... i once added 12 inches of soil around a maple.. proper to the trunk of the maple.. and by the end of the year ... the maple had COMPLETELY filled the new soil with roots ... not surprising now.. but a real lesson them ... plastic wont stop a maple.. and really isnt effective in the garden regardless ... if you want to garden out there.. get rid of the tree ...but that leads also to why you would want to garden in the city easement anyway ... have you considered talking to the city about having them remove the tree.. or the power company .. since it appears to be in the power lines ... when you opt for removal ... the ground chips are one of the best FREE mulch supplies in the world.. do NOT let them drive away with them.. and maple is probably the best firewood known ... the key to convincing hubby .. is at seed drop time.. when he has to spend hours cleaning them up.. that is the time to remind him how.. if the tree was gone ... he wouldnt be wasting effort cleaning up ... good luck ken...See MoreIs There Any Groundcover That Will Grow Under a NorWay Maple?
Comments (16)IMHO.. grass is the most invasive weed on the planet.. surviving even in the cracks of my thousand degree blacktop driveway .... IF IT WONT GROW UNDER A NORWAY .... nothing will .... i also have 1650 hosta... and they will not grow under any maple.. let alone a norway .... there will just never be enough water for them to prosper .... and i am the one who says that some hosta will grow on the driveway also ... here is a picture of maple roots.. a neighbors septic replacement project .... in case you are wondering what you are up against .... where wpuld you expect to grow roots.. so.. in summation your honor.. can it be done.. maybe... if you spend a couple thousand on trying to water effectively .... will you be happy and wildly successful.. i wouldnt bet a penny on it .... personally.. i would get rid of them ... IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN GARDENING IN THAT AREA ....otherwise... put down some hardwood mulch.. and put a swing and a beer cooler there.. and stare across the yard.. where you can garden ... ken, the maple hater ... Comments (1)Anything you plant is going to be in competition for moisture so if you amend the soil freely and plant invasive type plants like vinca or ajuga you could have success but I'd watch out for it incroaching into areas you don't want it to be in. Comments (13)I don't know know where you got the idea that the Norway Maple will cause more problems than any other maple, but it's simply not true Yes all large growing maples are competitive and dominating. But in my area Norway maple stands out for often having very little beneath it. And for becoming conspicuously slick with aphid drip during summer, which means that anything planted beneath it would also get coated - and be likely to host sooty mold fungus. Then there is the problem of the millions of seedlings that Norway maples produce in suitable climates and locations....See MoreEmbothrium
