Advice on Leather Sectional

Hi there! I have been reading a lot of posts on Houzz and have learned so much from these wonderful forums! However, a lot of the posts I looked at were a little out dated and I would love a personalized approach to my specific problem.

My wife and I are moving into a house located in Rancho Santa Margarita, California and have the budget of around 3-5k for an affordable quality leather sectional.

I tend to lean towards a more modern style of leather sectional, with clean lines and a "flatter" appearance to the backing and arm rests. Some of the sectionals I have looked at are the following:

My wife would love a "L" shape leather section, and ideally I would love a more modern piece. I would love any and all suggestions to help us reach our goal of finding this leather sectional, and with the hope of everyone maybe I can find the perfect couch!

Also: would love any additional insights into the Brands / Companies that I listed above, as well as any additional brands that I could find within my budget range. I am open to all advice and critiques - thanks!

You mention you are looking for a “L” shape sectional sofa. Your price will depend on the dimensions of the sectional. Your links shown show varied sizes and number of seats in each photo. First you must determine the seating space you need. How many people do you want to sit comfortable? Does quality of the leather and construction matter? Your price will be determined by number of seats you need along with construction and leather quality.

There are a few manufactures I can recommend that will fall within your price range and look like the styling you are after. If you don’t mind being made off our shores, I would look at Palatial. There are a few styles that fit well with your budget and looks you will like. I would also suggest Omnia Furniture, made in CA or Mckinley Leather made in North Carolina. Omnia will price lower because they are not a true 8-way hand-tie construction line like Mckinley. Both do however use top grain cowhide everywhere on the entire piece. Both companies also go the extra mile with attention to detail. To get the Mckinley to fall within your price range you will need to shop for stores that are offering sales or a discount. One more to look at is Palliser Furniture. They are based in Canada but manufacture in Mexico. They also have the style you are looking for that will fall within your budget.

I am not familiar with the line from Canada you have listed or the other brands but I do understand what Costco offers and all companies I have recommended are much higher quality both in leather and construction as they do not use 100% top grain leather everywhere and that is why the price will be higher on the lines I have recommended, but still within your budget. It comes down to you get what you pay for.

I think your price range is reasonable and think you can find the perfect sectional with a little investigation.

If you look at the manufactures suggested by spolina (Baker's Milling Road Collection, Hancock And Moore, Bernhardt, Lexington Brands, Swaim) then you can definitely buy below MSRP. Check Boyles in NC and Lexington Furniture Company in Lexington, KY. I have never gotten a better price locally. The best price has always come from these two stores. You just need to find what you want by looking in your local store, then contact Boyles and Lexington for a quote. I have purchased a Kindel dining room set; Hancock & Moore sofa; chair, & ottoman; Hickory Chair sofa, chair & ottoman; EJ Victor chair; Hekman table; Baker bed; Hickory Chair nightstands; Century sofa; Stickley desk; Wildwood lamps; and a Bernhardt bed in the past 5 years. Only the Stickley desk was cheaper locally as I got it on a double sale. The price difference depends on the brand. Manufactures by law cannot dictate the 3rd party retailer's selling price. The way they get around the law is to make it clear that they will not supply a store that sells below a certain minimum. They claim doing so ensures the "value" of the product brand. One brand my tolerate a minimum of 25% below MSRP; another will tolerate 30% below MSRP. Stores like Bassett and Ethan Allen hold the line on their price. If they have a sale, you get the sale price. Otherwise, the price is the price. Bassett will probably not give you the quality and look you are after.

That is the only living space in the house. It's a townhouse we're renting for a year or two. We sacrificed on space to be close to the beach, which has been an awesome choice, until Irma, of course. We don't have any other "real" furniture for the living area, and we wanted to avoid purchasing anything until we bought a home, but when the old sofa had to go, we had to replace that. So we don't have any other seating, but it's really not a big deal. We don't have kids or family in the area, and we don't have a bunch of people over at one time, so the sectional is enough for our current needs. Is there anything in particular you would suggest for ottomans? I would like something that fits physically with the sofa to get something close to a chaise feel without having to close off the space permanently as you would with a chaise. Finding the right size is important too, as I dislike the really big ottomans for sectionals; they take up way too much space and prevent the use of a coffee table.

Thanks for the great tips. Yes, it's a good point that 16 won't be sitting at the same time...more like 12 or so. Sadly, I have to go fairly dark due to the cleaning and staining issues. I should have added that I plan to add a large 12 x 15 area rug to break up the dark sofas from the darkish wood. I can't go with medium gray because it will look too "matchy-matchy" with the med. gray stone fireplace. Quick question/concern...I searched for sofas that are made from "Sunbrella" people here suggested and there are only a few and they are outdoor sofas. Mostly, the Sunbrella fabric is pillows. Also, I'll be removing both sofa tables behind the sofas that are there now, so that will give me another~ 4+ feet. But I still plan on putting more narrow sofa tables as I don't want the sofas right up against the walls, so it will be more like an extra 2 feet I'll be gaining. Any other suggestions for a "tough" fabric that won't be torn easily? We've had issues with guests sitting on the sofas, etc., with keys, etc, in their back pockets that tear the fabric or snag it. What are opinions on leather? Vinyl? Also, I'd like to lighten up the room with a cleaner, more modern white (ish) paint, maybe with a touch of gray, )but not with any blue or "pink" in it.) The walls are now painted Sherwin-Williams "Accessible Beige" and the Doors (not seen in the pictures are "Dovetail"...which I LOVE, but is way too dark for the walls. I've already gone down the line of the "Dovetail" paint strip and the lighter colors look kinda "pink-ish" in that room.) Thanks again everyone

I'm not in a position to comment on the furniture supplier but would like to make a suggestion regarding your choice of colour for the sectional. On your sketch, you show a white sectional but in your samples some of the colours are quite daring for a large piece of furniture. I would opt for a more subdued colour that you won't get tired of. If you like colour, go for the colour in accent pillows, it your get tired of them, it's not a big expense to change your colour scheme. Here is the sectional in what looks like a greyish green with your favorite rug and flooring.
