Comments (11)Hi romatravel - Depending on your zone ... if you still have time before Winter sets in, I think you might still have a bit of time ... Fall planting is always great for me. However you won't have time to ground-layer stems as I have done, ahead of time for insurance, in case digging & relocating fails ... you might be able to still do some stem clippings to grow indoors. As with this first attempt I did, it only took 2 weeks for the clumps to prove their resiliency & show survival from the assaults of the shovels & stress of the relocation. Knowing what I know now, in my zone I still have 'til Nov. I suggest you talk to a respectable/knowledgeable nursery, for their thoughts as well ... Good luck! Hi Madeyna - The pot-layering I did was basically similar & I think simpler, since I had to remove them from the, less than ideal site. I have another that I ground layered, an ES, in the mom's adjacent site, simply because the stem was naturally arching down on the ground. I did a shallow furrow, covered with soil & topped with a brick. I'll be checking in Spring. Several different H. stem clippings, I attempted this summer seem to be doing well ... will over-winter in the garage & plant them for my dil! Have a great Fall day!...See Moreplanning to move to coast
Comments (17)actually if you check out the zone map that Ron linked to you will notice that a number of points on the oregon (including coos bay/north bend and bandon where i live)coast are rated as 9a while the gold beach/brookings area is rated zone 9b. he makes a good point in noting that north of c.b./n.b. large old cordyline australis is rare or absent which is a good indicator of periodic low winter temps regardless of what a zone map might indicate. i may also add that after living over 20 years in the area, i recall at least 3 times where exceptional winter lows (below 20f) in that area killed to the ground exotics like acacia dealbata, callistemon citrinus, and the cordyline (although all came back in the spring). maps aside, the oregon (and washington and b.c.) coast is generally a great place to grow a huge variety of "mild temperate" plants ornamental and otherwise as long as they are tolerant of cool summer temps. for the same reason, it is a challenging place to grow roses (but an excellent place to grow rose diseases). on the other hand, inland portions like the willamette valley from portland to roseburg while somewhat hotter in the summer and somewhat cooler in the winter are still extremely mild and closer to world-class medical care and big-city services. another thing to consider is that because of a sudden surge in real estate values down here on the coast property in the eugene-roseburg inland area may be somewhat more affordable while living-wage employment opportunities are also much better....See More3 years planning, 2 years install...Done - DIY Natural Cherry Kit
Comments (16)There are 2 garbage slide outs. One under each sink. The single can one is 19" wide and the double can is 16.5". Door drawer fronts and the face frames and cab boxes I bought came from cabinetmakers choice. http://cabinetmakerschoice.com/ You can buy these things from a lot of places. This place was very helpful and extremely responsive. In fact when a face frame arrived broken they sent me a new one withen a week. Building is straightforward IFF you have a table saw, router, chop saw and most importantly and pocket hole system. Prefinished plywood also helps. There are links on the web for how to make cabinets but the most important thing is the confidence to try. Keith...See MoreFinalizing fall plan, input appreciated and a couple final questions
Comments (8)What are you doing about weeds? Have you used a selective weed killer? Are you planning to use glyphosate? Are you doing an overseed or a renovation? What is your seed down date? Move the "mow short and bag everything up" to right before seeding. If this is an overseed, you should gradually reduce your mowing height. You may or may not need to dethatch. The aeration earlier may be enough. You want the aeration holes to fill in before seeding so the seeds don't fall down too deep. It's best to keep lime and fertilizer apart. Also good to do the lime well in advance of seeding (several months ago would have been ideal), so the sooner you can do that, the better. I have used lime before at seeding and nothing terrible happened. But it's better if the pH has been adjusted and is in a good range before putting seed down. Lime takes time to work. I would do it today. The aeration, when you can get that done, will push the lime further down into the ground, having about the same effect as if you applied the lime after aeration. Just get it down....See Moremelle_sacto is hot and dry in CA Zone 9/
