Birthday cakes

Yes, it's that time of year again. The Monkey Princess will be 13 in just a few days and wanted a trip to the outlet mall shopping for her birthday. It shall be so.....

Her brother, the Tasting Monkey, is 11. (sigh) He wanted work boots! Not legos or Hot Wheels or video games. Bates boots. And that was also done...

We had a party, though, and I made cakes. I had some assistance from two small Assistant Monkeys, working on the fondant and pretending they were Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. A bit early in the season, but, well....

The Princess decreed that hers should be blue and should sparkle and must be Funfetti with vanilla buttercream filling. OoohhhKaaay...

The Taster needed chocolate cake with caramel filling and fondant. He insisted on making all the "tires" himself out of black fondant and the kids spent the party eating them and grinning with black teeth. Yeah. Oh, and it had to involve a 1968 Mustang Cobra....popping a wheelie.....and leaving skid marks!

After a feast of sloppy joes, chips, fresh fruit and veggies with dip, blue punch and cake, there were presents. The Princess got her favorite gift, that would be cash. Ahem.

The Taster got games, clothes and.....paisley patterned socks? Is that a mistake? Whatever, he took that nicely in stride, LOL.

All attendees under the age of 15 then trooped down to the barn to play with the kittens and feed the horses, then drive the Mule around the hayfield, leaving the adults to drink coffee and clean up the mess. Happy birthday!

Boy time surly is going by quickly I remember when the
Princess had to have a Barbie Doll Princess Cake and the Assistant could hardly
walk. Happy Birthday to both of them I can’t believe the Princess is a teenager…
Cakes are beautiful as usual but then you have munchkins to help.

My apple cake with the gravy, because it is very heavy with apples is not good as a layer cake, doesn't cut well and with 4 cups of apples, it's heavy!. But it is spectacular as a 9 by 12 cake....with gravy on each square....passed warm in a pitcher....with maybe a small scoop of vanilla ice cream....and the "gravy" over the top. You can probably cut 16 pieces out of one cake....but....it's also very good for breakfast!! I have used this one for a layered birthday cake....with a caramel frosting...or maybe a burnt sugar....I forget. I cut back a little on the nutmeg....I think 1 tsp is a bit much and for a layer cake, that recipe makes 2 8 inch layers. And I always use my own applesauce. When I am making applesauce, I reserve a cup and make this cake. Cake, Applesauce, mine 1 egg beaten 1/2 cup shorteningÃ¯Â¿Â½I use butter 1 cup of sugar 1 cup cold unsweetened applesauce 1 3/4 cups AP flour 1 tsp soda 3/4 tsps salt 1 tsp nutmeg 1 1/2 tsps cinnamon 1/4 tsp powdered cloves 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup raisins and nuts cut upÃ¯Â¿Â½optional Sift together, flour soda, salt and spices Cream shortening, beat in sugar, beat in the egg and the applesauce and vanillaÃ¯Â¿Â½.add the flour etc and pour into a greased 8 Ã¯Â¿Â½ by 11 pan and bake at 350 for 45 to 60 minutesÃ¯Â¿Â½.until a pick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Very pretty. My Mother would eat all the raspberry butter cream and leave the cake, LOL, she says it's her prerogative at 80 to just eat the frosting if she wants. She usually does eat mostly frosting and filling and she loves all things raspberry. Annie

Yes, 4. It's hard for me to believe too. (sigh) The older I get, the faster the time goes, it seems, funny how Chase and I have that in common. (grin) Sharon, I thought about selling cakes, then decided that I really just want to play with flour and fondant. I want to see a picture or think of something and make that, and I don't want to deal with some spoiled bride complaining that a ruffle is 1/16th of an inch lower on one side so she doesn't have to pay me. I've had a couple of people ask right after I made the birch bark wedding cake, but decided I just don't want to deal with the inevitable hassle, or the problems with transporting and setting up some of those elaborate concoctions. Coconut, I'm glad to see you here! Yes, Makayla is a big help, and she's far more artistic than I am, so she's good at things like painting gold lustre dust on those mermaid tails and making fondant seaweed. When the kids get those ideas, though, I don't hesitate to say "I can't do that". They promptly come up with something else. And if I try it and it doesn't work, I do something else and they're always fine with it. It's cake, after all... Ellen, cake and buttercream frosting and fondant and M&Ms and ice cream. Yeah. It's their parents' problem. (snicker) Cindy Mac, Maci is adorable in appearance, she's fierce in behavior, trust me. She's the youngest and the loudest of all the grandkids. Dcarch, they did indeed, eat cake. No leftovers for me to deal with, double bonus. Colleen, a lot of my cakes are your chocolate cake recipe, the texture is "right" for holding up decorations! Kathy, your Beau/Lily must be getting nearly as big as Makayla. It's hard to believe. Annie

13.....holy cow! I remember when you announced that she was on the way and were stressing out about being a grandma. Grannie Annie we joked! See? Turned out pretty good didn't it?

Good gracious, I knew the Monkey Princess before she was even born! Is it really 13 years? And Bud! 11! Holy cow! Happy birthday to both, with awesome cakes!

I'm not here as regularly as I once was, but I enjoy seeing a post about your family when I pop in. I remember the Princess before she was school age and Bud as a toddler. Wowee - time flies!

Happy Birthday wishes to them both. Fabulous job on the cakes :)

I love both cake, but I got criticism for making blue (turquoise) icing when I was 13! I also love the car on the cake - I collected model cars when I was 11, and so I can relate to that as well. I only used silver balls (the wedding cake kind) for sparkle when I was little - nice to know that there are now blue sparkles available!

Which outlet mall did you go to? Is there one in Grand Rapids? Kevin and I went to the one in Cabazon a couple of weeks ago, and it was a bit overwhelming for me.

Lars, we haven't gone to the outlet mall yet, we're going to the one in Birch Run. It's by Frankenmuth, where we are spending the night, it's one of those German/Bavarian themed tourist kind of towns, with lots of Oktoberfest type activities that go on all the time.

There is, however, an outlet mall in Grand Rapids too, and they are kind of overwhelming. Plus, they are entirely outdoors, which is not necessarily a pleasant thing in Michigan in the fall/winter. I'm just hoping for dry weather, no rain or snow, so we can actually walk around town and the mall without getting drenched or freezing!
