Crazy or brilliant? Closing up the LR/DR opening -- ideas?
Comments (19)French doors will give you the option of a door between the DR and LR, add to the value of your house. A lace curtain over the glass is the traditional way to cover them for privacy. If you wall in the space, please put your 2x4's 16" oc. It will take only a couple more and you will need the extra studs for nailing - sheet rock and trim are designed to be nailed every 16". If you are going to the effort of building a wall, do it right. Many people close in and rename their dining rooms. It's a fine idea to use the space you have to suit your family. But a house that 'goes around' works better - think of small children chasing each other through a house, happy for hours, or a party where people don't get caught in a dead end room but can circulate easily. So even if you close the door most of the time, I would suggest that you leave one, even if it is only a single French door. Yes, if you can only get to the DR through the kitchen, it is not a formal DR. When you have a dinner party and wish to entertain in the LR, you then set the table with your favorite china and silver, etc., and welcome people into your dining room formally - in Victorian days the gentlemen would have offered their arms to the ladies and escorted them into the dining room! However, if you do not entertain like that and do not intend to move in the next 5 years, do what you want! Someone else can change it back....See Moremy crazy idea for an upholstered headboard
Comments (7)I understand exactly what you're thinking of doing! I am sure that this can be done, but it might require a furniture-maker to arrange the frame correctly. If you are handy though, I don't see why you couldn't make it work. Could your upholsterer come over and share his opinion? Our guy both could and would do that (come over *and* rebuild the piece). We are planning to do the same thing, only with a new sofa, because of my issues with arthritis and a bad back, to give me lots of support in bed. Our favorite local furniture dealer said that he'd be able to get us the upholstered frame only of any sofa we wanted. The only thing we'd need to do is get accurate measurements so that our queen mattress and box spring would slide in. Of course, it will look like an always open sleeper sofa, but with the right combo of upholstery and bed linens, that would be fine with me. Good luck with your quest. I'll be interested in knowing what happens....See MorePlease help me find this chair! :)
Comments (19)When I did a seach for those chairs to help out OP, I had seen a couple bloggers that posted regarding the chair and the ones I saw said they bought the chair(s) at Home Good or TJ Maxx but none stated what brand the chair was. I've noticed a lot of the chairs I've seen at Home Goods or TJ Maxx are Lane. Another note, most of the sites where I saw that chair mentioned was from a couple years back...Not sure how likely those same exact chairs would come back through Home Goods or TJ Maxx....See MoreIs it crazy to convert the breakfast area into a sitting area
Comments (30)I'm just going to chime in here to say that we had two dining areas off our kitchen, since it was open on two sides. One was the informal everyday dining area, and the other was the formal dining room. We have a small house and I realized it was a complete waste of space to have two dining areas and since we rarely entertained and even used the formal dining room, why have it just sitting there most of the time, unused. In my case, I converted the informal dining area into a project work space and we started eating in the formal dining room every day, every meal, or at least most. I would encourage you to utilize the formal dining room in similar creative ways. At my last house, I had a small office at one end of the dining room, just for bill paying, mail sorting and occasional correspondence. I had it all set up on a rolling cart, and when I was working I just rolled it next to the table where I was sitting. Made for easy set up and take down. Very occasionally, i used the top of the rolling table as a serving cart when I entertained, so it also did double duty. Also in my own formal dining room, I now have some bookshelves. Great if you use the dining table as a homework spot. As for me, I sometimes like to go in there and have a muffin and coffee and read, plus I keep my cookbooks and recipe file in there so I often sit in there to make up my grocery list based on what I plan on fixing . . . Lastly, I wouldn't rule out the seating area as a possible food prep space, I'd want easy to clean stuff and a table that was possible to work or eat from . . . low key....See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
