Recall of a Few Iams Dry Dog and Cat and Eukanuba Dog Foods
Comments (0)FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - August 14, 2013 - The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) has voluntarily recalled specific lots of dry pet food because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. These lots were distributed in the United States and represent roughly one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of annual production. No Salmonella-related illnesses have been reported to date in association with these product lots. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers. Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. This issue is limited to the specific dry pet food lot codes listed below. This affects roughly one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of total annual production. The affected product was distributed to select retailers across the United States. These products were made during a 10 day window at a single manufacturing site. P&Gs routine testing determined that some products made during this timeframe have the potential for Salmonella contamination. As a precautionary measure, P&G is recalling the potentially impacted products made during this timeframe. No other dry dog food, dry cat food, dog or cat canned wet food, biscuits/treats or supplements are affected by this announcement. P&G is retrieving these products as a precautionary measure. Consumers who purchased a product listed below should stop using the product and discard it and contact P&G toll-free at 800-208-0172 (Monday Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM EST), or via website at www.iams.com or www.eukanuba.com. Comments (19)As a vet, I can say truthfully that NO, vets do NOT get kickbacks from ANY pet food company. I personally don't recommend science diet except in certain instances. For example, end-stage kidney failure and severe liver disease might make me recommend either the Science Diet or Purina prescription diet for life. Short term, I've used s/d to dissolve bladder stones, but back to regular food once stones are dissolved. And very short term maybe an easily digestible food prescription diet for after a major abdominal surgery or severe GI disease. Other than those specific instances, I rarely use any prescription diets, and certainly not the Science Diet non-prescription foods. Even for food allergies, I prefer novel protein and carbohydrate diets such as Natural Balance vs prescription diets (except Royal Canin, which is good food, but we don't sell it) As far as how much food my own dogs get, I feed Eagle Pack Holistic Select, Natural Balance, or Solid Gold. My huskies (37-48 pounds) eat 1 cup of food a day each. My 65 pound VERY active rottie eats 3 cups a day. I'm sure if I fed Iams or Beneful or whatever they'd eat a LOT more. Of course the BEST food is natural whole food, like a raw diet or homemade cooked food. But most of us don't have the time or expertise to cook balanced meals for our pets. Also check your local pet store for good deals. I get the 10th bag of food free......See MoreDry dog food.....
Comments (14)Lucille, you have a Lab puppy so shelf life is pretty much a non-issue! Dog food shipments to Menard's comes in on pallets. High turnover on product. I see people in there buying 5 or more big 40# bags of dog food at a time. Breeders, I suppose but some people around have a small herd of sporting/ hunting dogs, too. As long as you are buying from a warehouse store or similar that has a high turnover, probably needn't be concerned about best by dates. I buy the 40# size for my big boy Sheltie. He is around 35#, free feeds, not an ounce of fat on him but he eats almost as much as my son feeds his Golden Retriever. The Golden is a glutton and could never be free fed. Just with the last two bags--I have repackaged in whatever food safe container I could scrounge including mylar potato chip bags (fold & staple closed) and storing the basement fridge. Mostly because I wanted to get the dog food bin out of the kitchen....See MoreDog food questions
Comments (6)I worked in the humane industry and worked with a lot of veterinarians. A couple of the vets that practiced holistic medicine and one of the vets that, in my opinion, was truly exceptional, all had the same theory on why we were seeing more and more food allergies in dogs. Years ago we fed all kinds of foods and scraps and stuff to our dogs. Then we began feeding dry dog food, the same exact food day in day out. At that time, most dogs would become allergic to chicken, so manufacturers started producing lamb based diets. Then people started feeding lamb from puppyhood through adulthood and we started seeing more lamb allergies. They all switched protein sources regularly. Get a bag of chicken, then a bag of beef, then a bag of lamb, then something else. Some dogs need to switch from one to the other slowly, but dogs who are used to getting different foods all the time seem to do just fine. I had a dog who became allergic to chicken, and then to lamb and then to beef - it seemed anything I fed him for more than a few months after the chicken allergy manifested itself became another protein that the dog couldn't eat. I started switching between salmon, venison and rabbit each week and the dog never had another issue. I never again fed the same food consistently. I buy different brand and different protein sources, some with grains, some without . . . I feed 1/2 a can of dog food each day and buy about 10 different varieties, so they get something different every day. Their systems are used to the variety, they don't get digestive issues from changing all the time and not one has had a food allergy since I started doing this. (about 20 years now). And yes - most dog food is being made with scraps and waste that would typically be considered waste product. Even those bags that claim that the ingredients are human grade aren't being perfectly transparent. Human grade means the butchered animal was USDA inspected and that the plant is USDA inspected, and that the handling and transportation is done in compliance with the production of foods meant to be eaten by humans, not that the meal was made from parts that humans would eat. Non human grade meat products can come from dead, dying or diseased animals....See More- 9 years agolast modified: 9 years ago
