Marble Shower in Master remodel- grout lines wrong..,
Comments (6)Sorry I haven't been able to respond. In the meantime, I'm thinking it's going to be fine. I think 1/8" grout lines with the addition of sanded grout is probably the best for our shower. I am over it. Still bothered because it's not what I asked for, but I'm willing to let it go. I'm going to try and post some pictures. It does look great, so it's hard to complain. As the remodel comes to a close, I am just ready to be done! I am also convinced that they used the wrong grout color as well- I asked for silverado which I thought was a light gray, but it looks more like an off white. I give up!...See MoreTiling Question- What Would You Do?
Comments (14)Thanks for your help, everyone! I only had a few hours to tile today, but decided to continue one horizontal line across the 3 walls. Before today the plan was to tile up to the range hood, but we feared it would close the kitchen in a bit. If it looks awkward, I can add a few rows pretty easily. I like the idea about better tying in the range hood with a shelf or piece of stainless steel. That might work well. There will be about 14" extra inches of painted wall between the tile & hood. Maybe just a shelf? @may_flowers- Whoa! Just a little face-lift. We're not moving around cabinets. Really, just paint, back splash, and a few new appliances for now. No fan of the cabinets, but they are what they are. @fishymom-The tile is allen + roth 4x12" in the pearl finish. Looks nice installed, but lots of superficial scratches on the tile surface. Frustrating, but the price was pretty great. And the scratches don't show in this installation. Only when in direct sunlight. @Trebruchet- Thanks for the advice. You noted the same back in October when I posted some pics of the kitchen. It's laid out the way it's laid out. We certainly don't love it, but the layout will have to wait for a full kitchen re-do. There is about 3" between the burners and the side wall. I posted the link of before pics from back in October. Pics of today's progress. Don't pick apart my tiling please! Comments (13)itltrot - it would have to be one or the other, white tile or the light travertine, the two would not work together. Here is a board to show you what I'm talking about. The Chairo pictured is available at Lowes and the Ivory Tumbled is available at The Tile Shop. Either would be pretty with the darker granite. What you want to do is use the same tile which ever you choose throughout the bathroom (even the floor maybe instead of the wood tiles ) as well as the shower and change the sizes of your tile in different areas to add interest. There are several granites that are similar to the Blue Pearl. I would go with a darker granite for contrast with the mosaic. As you can see on the board, the Pearl Blue is a little too light against the mosaic but the darker granite pops. You could do the pencils and chair rail for the wall feature and accents in Noir Travertine which is black in color and is available at The Tile Shop, see link below. Prices are high on their site but less expensive in the stores especially with a contractors discount. I would do the floor of the shower in the cream Travertine mosaic. The walls in a larger tile, 12x12. You just need to go look at tiles to find the one that will work best in the space. Here's the design I came up with for our feature wall and bathroom. As you can see, I just repeated the sizes to tie all the areas together. Hope this helps. here's ours: Wall Feature Shower Floor Niche Floor Here is a link that might be useful: Noir Travertine...See MoreTile job-what would you do?
Comments (32)Thank you, cpartist...yes a huge difference for sure. I'm excited to get the master done and have this over with. We'll re-do the other tile floors that he messed up eventually but not now. I want to say for any lurkers reading to take the advice of not building a house unless you have contingency money set aside. In this case the new tile guy's prices were about triple the original guy's prices. I'm ok with paying more for quality work and luckily we had the money. The other problem was that the GC isn't wanting to pay for the tile or for the demo. My argument is that he got paid 12% to oversee all this work and I should not have to pay for the materials that I already bought nor for the demo on crappy work. But we're moved in and need showers. And the new tile guy doesn't care who's right or wrong and wants to get paid. So I pay while I argue about getting the money back. I'll definitely get it back but I'm out of pocket until then. Can't reimburse me for my time or inconvenience though! Oh and the new tile guy nicked one of the brand new tubs in 3 spots!! Ugghh....See Moreskw27
