Rose disease?

Good morning

I was checking my roses as I do daily and noticed some odd things:

First this on a Nahema leaf

And then this, which is kind of very disturbing, on a Gertrude Jekyll

As you can see the growth is coming out of what was supposed to be a bloom and the last time I looked at that bud ( 2 days ago) there was nothing suspicious about it. Is it rosette? What do I do about it? What about the roses it's planted with? 3 Pat Austins. Does it mean they are diseased too? The Pat Austin are very healthy and bloom continuously while this Gertrude hasn't bloomed at all since I planted it last year. Bought as a 3 year potted plant from a local nursery.

I am really very worried. Should I shovel Gertrude immediately?

Gladis, don't panic! Your Gertrude Jekyll isn't showing a disease, but rather rose proliferation, also known as vegetative centers. Seen occasionally with roses & other flowers. Thought to result from over fertilization of nitrogen & weather variances. Some roses exhibit this more often than others, but haven't heard Gertrude known for this. Thinking rose rosette disease is mainly local to North America & not aware of it existing along the Mediterranean. Unfamiliar with your leaf damage. From your member page, sounds like you grow a lovely garden. Welcome to the Roses Forum! Sue

The first picture could be insect eggs on the leaf.

And the article is from someone in Yorktown VA. Less than accurate is this: Rose rosette disease, first documented in 1941, is traced to the multiflora rose, which came from Japan in 1866 as a common rootstock for ornamental roses. Unfortunately, it was found that multiflora roses are bad because a single plant can produce a million or more viable seeds; over time, the roses have become invasive weeds with enormous disease problems. Multiflora was first introduced as a garden plant. NOT as a rootstock. Multiflora spread not from rootstock but from the USDA's encouragement of its use as a substitute for barbed wire, as a stabilizer for stream banks, to prevent erosion from strip mining, etc. And the disease problem is a single disease.

The crispy edges also make me think thrips but those pink dots & your comment it’s wetter than usual make me think you may have botrytis. It’s a fungal infection that can occur when you’ve had a lot of rain (or with frequent overhead watering.) Some varieties are naturally more susceptible than others (high petal count and/or thin petals)and water gets trapped inside an opening bloom and rots it. Sometimes blooms fail to open at all (“ball”) they’ll frequently have the pink dots and when advanced can display a fuzzy grayish mold if they remain damp and never get a chance to dry out. It definitely does vary year to year.

Jeri, i totally agree when i saw my new growth first time, i actually freak out . i have teas and chinas and you can imagine me looking at them suspiciously. Then i will be Googling . What i learn is no one has it in Florida then you know how minds jump...but i eyed my roses for days until it turn to normal color. Now, i am used to the colors. That really bites about the poor woman cutting her roses. I hope it grew back and not thinking the worst giving a shovel.

I wish I could see the sawfly in my photo you refer to, but I can’t. Nevertheless, I’m going with the sawfly as the culprit and will act with some haste tomorrow because the damage seems to move pretty fast to serious. Funny how someone like myself can suddenly experience a problem after 45 years of growing roses and never before see the problem. Thanks so much for all the good responses. I was lost For a solution.

These kinds of mutations are just flukes. You may never see it happen again. I've only seen it happen once on my roses. Quietness had a rose grow out of the center of another rose. Most times vegetative centers are just small green leafy stuff in the center of the rose instead of the usual stamens.

The leaf does look like some kind of insect damage. Check the undersides of the leaves for very small worm like creatures.

Yes first looks like leaf skeletonizer feeding. Larvae that did it may no longer be present.

Oh my God! Thank you so much Sue! I was very very upset all day imagining every possible scenario and wondering whether it could have spread to the other roses. Thank you!

Buford, thanks for your reply.

Nahema is the only rose with this patch, and the patch is only on one leaf, though some other roses are starting to show rust this is very different. The spot is translucent and the little lines can be seen from both sides. I took it off the rose.

Seil, hi, indeed it could be worm damage. Just last week I noticed some leaves were eaten, and I looked for the little green monsters then picked them off.

I have a double delight bud right now with some green thing growing out of the center. I will try to post a picture later. I know I fertilized a lot a few weeks ago, so that's probably why.
