Green Giant or some other ever green ?
Comments (10)OK .... i have green giants... that i started from 6 inch peat plugs in 2001, or so .... and abused them greatly .. lol ... they are about 15 feet tall ... and about 5 to 8 feet wide.. and are just getting rolling .. no tree/conifer ... is going to magically stop growing ... on my 5 acres.. they are going to be just great ... especially when they are 30 feet tall by 10 feet wide ... or 15 ... i was thinking your yard was a bit smaller .... but i cant see it .. so you are going to have to decide... if they are of proper proportion to your yard .... are you willing to give up 10 or 15 feet .. back where you want to plant them???? white pine .... ALWAYS ends up shedding lower branches... as it get 30.. 40.. 50.. 60 .. 120 .. feet tall ... you can leave them .. but they can get really ugly ... and then you are left with big stinkin trees... but not the privacy you wanted .... are you willing to give up this much space???? please.. consider this .... YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PLANT ALL OF ONE THING .... do two pines... do a few GGiants .. and a few spruce.. etc ... diversity rules .... and if somewhere down the line.. some dont please you ... or get too ugly .. you remove just those... but still have the privacy you want... and keep in mind ... trees planted... half way out to the property line... can be correspondingly smaller.. to offer teh privacy you want .... no one says.. privacy barriers have to be lined out at the fence .... a picture would sure help .. good luck ken...See MoreLooking For Green Tomato Mincemeat for BWB and other Green Tomato
Comments (9)Processing time seems awfully short on that one, especially considering the fat. Hi Robin. I'm not generally a fan of green tomato anything; to me most green tomato recipes reflect a kind of end-of-harvest-desperation. But here's a green tomato mincemeat that does pass muster. It's been called "sinful." Green Tomato, Apple & Pear Mincemeat Use completely green tomatoes; they should not show white, yellow or pinkish cheeks. A pint will fill an 8-inch pie. With the addition of diced fresh apple, some nuts, a few snipped dried apricots, a dollop of rum or brandy, it will fill a 9-inch pie. 3 quarts coarsely chopped completely green tomatoes, scrubbed and trimmed of stem scars 1 Tablespoon canning and pickling salt 1 1/2 quarts diced, peeled and cored firm, tart apples, the firmer the better 1 quart diced, peeled and cored firm, slightly underripe pears 2 1/2 cups dark seedless raisins Grated zest (no white pith) and chopped pulp of 1 large or 2 medium oranges Grated zest of 1 1/2 large lemons 1/2 cup cider vinegar 1/2 cup undiluted frozen apple juice concentrate, thawed 3 1/2 cups (packed) light brown sugar 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 cup dark rum, preferably Jamaican 1. Stir chopped green tomatoes and salt together, then scrape into a colander and let drain for 2 hours. 2. Combine drained tomatoes with all other ingredients except the rum. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Lower heat and cook mincemeat, uncovered, stirring often, until thick enough to mound in a spoon. Stir often to prevent sticking at the end of cooking. 3. Stir in the rum and ladle boiling-hot inot hot, clean pint canning jars, leaving 1/2" headspace; remove air bubbles. Seal with two-piece canning lids and process BWB 30 minutes. This comes from Helen Witty's Fancy Pantry, one of the best (if not the best) preserving books ever. I increased the BWB time by 5 minutes to reflect currant standards. Comments (65)I don't know where you guys are getting that Walmart is doing great. They are not - closing stores and same store sales are flat or down depending on what quarter. They are facing increased competition from online and other retailers. I remember the day when you could go into Walmart and all shelves were stocked. They had some awesome IT infrastructure and made it work for them. But lately they are bare more often than not. A new (less than 2 year old) store is a dismal place to shop. P&G has stated that WM accounts for 14% of their sales. Period- outside of the USA WM is nothing. And those sales would not be affected at all. Bottom line is none of this would ever happen as no exec has the cajones to tell WM to stick it. But someone like P&G could pull it off if they thought long term. Simple as launching a full on assault on WM to get those shoppers into the aisles of the competitors! Something like full page ads "Walmart dropped us so we now have BOGO (Buy One Get One Free) everywhere else for the next month. It would cost but would get people into the competitors and long term would be better for them. I'm sure Target, grocery stores would love the chance to get those customers in the door....See MoreNew Grab Green and Stoneworks detergent order, to be mailed :)
Comments (13)@Miami, I will keep you posted on the products. It looks like from @Rococo's post that there aren't enzymes in the Stoneworks. So, it should be good for lightly soiled clothing. I could use it on my work jackets. I wear easy fitted jackets to work that don't require strong detergents, nor whitening. @Chris, I love NY state. I've been to visit son 5 times in the last 3 years. I stayed at a lovely B&B in Stillwater (country) across the road from my sons rental house. When he tells people where he lives, they say "oh, you live on the battle field." The Saratoga battle field park is nearby, but I imagine that in real life that field is a lot larger than the park. I went to visit the park 3 years ago and it was amazing to reflect on the Revolutionary War and landscape. I love landscapes. I especially love hardwood forest!!! The tree that the cutting board comes from was reportedly planted just after the Revolution, and was considered a landmark tree in Rhinebeck, 126' tall and about 6' diameter. One big walnut. @Linus, thanks so much for your kind words. I hope your friend finds solace. I believe your assistance and kind regards are a blessing for him and you. Thank you for "getting" my silly sense of humor ;) I love that bird picture. Its a sheet of leather that someone tooled. I thought is was the sweetest thing, so I bought it and found a frame for it. @Rococogul, I understand about not wanting to burn the wood. As I said, I look hardwoods. Great tip about putting the pod into a pocket or wrapping into the laundry. I realize that I now have too much detergent. One thing I will do with the pods, is use a few of them at work. I learned that one of our mental health clients used scents to "ground" herself from flashbacks. Many of our clients struggle with this. She always kept a little jar of lavender flowers to smell to help herself calm. I had a ton of lavender left over from DD wedding last summer, so I brought client some more lavender, along with Purex scent beads, and a Vetiver pod. She would keep the pod in its own jar and use it to help her ground when she awoke from a nightmare. I now tell clients, if they are at the grocery store and have anxiety/panic to go to the laundry section and smell the detergent :) Of course this is in a larger discussion about stress and anxiety....See MoreNothing Left to Say
