0.5 acres too small for green giant? hmm.... that's a disappointment :(

Our tree guy came by today, and I asked him about green giant. He said he never heard of it and suggests me to plant white pine instead. I looked for the picture of white pine on the internet, they seem much bigger than green giant...... I'm really confused now.

I don't want the row of tree take too much space of back yard, but would like something tall enough to cover the neighbor's 2 story house in the back. Any suggestion??

Ken's not always wrong ;^) but it sure seems to me you'd be able to accomodate GG's in that amount of space. Hi Ken..........................+oM

White Pine, while a beautiful, fast growing tree, will grow waaaaay bigger than Green Giant, and too large for your yard. It sounds like your back yard is large enough for Green Giants. Ordering from a reputable internet source out-of-state will not be a problem -- they should be fine in Ohio. Just be sure to mulch them and keep them well watered for the first year, and during dry periods the second year. I would order and plant as soon as possible.

i have green giants... that i started from 6 inch peat plugs in 2001, or so .... and abused them greatly .. lol ...

they are about 15 feet tall ... and about 5 to 8 feet wide.. and are just getting rolling .. no tree/conifer ... is going to magically stop growing ... on my 5 acres.. they are going to be just great ... especially when they are 30 feet tall by 10 feet wide ... or 15 ...

i was thinking your yard was a bit smaller .... but i cant see it .. so you are going to have to decide... if they are of proper proportion to your yard .... are you willing to give up 10 or 15 feet .. back where you want to plant them????

white pine .... ALWAYS ends up shedding lower branches... as it get 30.. 40.. 50.. 60 .. 120 .. feet tall ... you can leave them .. but they can get really ugly ... and then you are left with big stinkin trees... but not the privacy you wanted ....

are you willing to give up this much space????

please.. consider this .... YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PLANT ALL OF ONE THING .... do two pines... do a few GGiants .. and a few spruce.. etc ... diversity rules .... and if somewhere down the line.. some dont please you ... or get too ugly .. you remove just those... but still have the privacy you want...

and keep in mind ... trees planted... half way out to the property line... can be correspondingly smaller.. to offer teh privacy you want .... no one says.. privacy barriers have to be lined out at the fence ....

White pine will not make a good screen as it ages. White pines open up with age and won't do what you are trying to achieve.

One other option is Thuja occidentalis 'Hetz Wintergreen'. This is a very fast growing plant that usually only has a single leader so it does not splay apart in heavy snow or ice storms.

This plant grows fast (with good soil moisture, up to 3' per year, once established) so you don't need to purchase large plants. Check your local nurseries and see if you can find them. If your local nursery does not carry them, Iseli produces these and maybe your nursery can order them for you?

If you want to get them online, the nursery at the link sells small plants VERY cheaply. You will need to protect these small plants from the bunnies, etc. until they get a little size to them.

Thank you for everybody's comment, I think I'll go for green giant for my back yard.

Our fence wan't right on the property line, there are still 2 ft to the back property line(104X104 is the size inside the fence) I think we will put the trees 7-8 ft away from the fence, so it will be about 10 ft away from the property line in the back. I know a row of trees will take some space out of back yard, but I really want to be able to enjoy the back yard without the feeling of people looking from inside the house. But it will probably take several years to achieve the privacy we want, beacuse the green giant we are going to order are only 20inch tall.

Anybody in the landscape/tree business knows about Green Giants. Well known for their screening abilities. He must have some white pines he needs to move. Poor choice for a screen especially as they age. Because he is not honest with you I would fine a new tree guy.

I would go for the green giants 3-4 foot tall on 6-8 ft. centers and get your screening issues resolve quickly.

I'm surprised no one carries TGG in the nurseries down here. Plenty of Leyland Cypress. No Eastern Red Cedar or Arizona Cypress for sale either. Perhaps its a hold-over from a general Texas dislike for Ashei Juniper commonly called cedar. We do see ERC and Arizona Cypress planted at older homes. Oh well, at least it helps the mail order guys.
