A friend of mine planted about 100 Green Giants about three years ago. They were about 18-24" tall when he planted them. Green Giants are pretty deer resistant, but where my friend and I live there are just too many deer in a small area (island) for that to mean much. The first year he planted these 100 Green Giants, the deer destroyed about 25 of them. After he replaced them, I recommended that he start using Milorganite fertilizer around the trees to keep the deer away. (It's an unadvertized fact that Milorganite acts as a deer repellent.) He started dumping Milorganite around the base of the trees on the perimeter of his property and the following year those were nearly 2ft. taller than the other trees (same growing conditions). Needless to say he started using it around all the Green Giants and this year some of the ones that he started using it on first are taller than me (6ft.). I started using Milorganite on my lawn a few years ago to keep the deer away that were eating my plants and it did wonders for my lawn. I started dumping it around all my perennials, mixing it in with the potting soil for my annuals, and tilling it into my vegetable garden. Everything improved! The stuff is like the Frank's Red Hot commercial... I put that s*#& on everything! I'm not sure it's the "best" fertilizer for your Green Giants, but it's definitely good. In the past I was always afraid to fertilize because I'd overdone it too many times and killed/burned too many plants and lawn. Milorganite is organic, so you can't really use too muich... it will just sit there on/in the soil until the soil microorganisms can consume it. Good luck!

where is the easement.. do you own this space.. so as to legally plant site blocking CONIFERS??? conifers NEVER stop growing.. there is no max height nor width ... EVER ... most estimates are at 10 years... and you can easily double such at 20 years .... and triple it in 30.. etc .. can you see.. where you conifers.. will be in the road.. in the future ...???? and finally.. NEVER water a tree nor a conifer with a lawn irrigation system .. a conifers needles.. should NEVER be wetted repeatedly .... properly planted.. and mulched.. a transplant needs water for 2 years... until fully established.. and basically..never again .. it is a waste of money to set up your lawn irrigation ... for such you sound like you are in a big hurry ... but you dont seem to have a grasp of how to deal with CONIFERS ... [of which there is a forum if you wish to be enabled .. but they are also trees.. so no need to duplicate the post ...] ken ps: train your dog.. and plant your plants inside the fence.. instead of in the easement .. dont be one of these peeps.. who in 10 years.. curses the road commission or power company for cutting down their beloved trees ... Hello EVERYONE!!! It has been a long winter here in Wyoming. I am posting today to get some more helpfull input on these trees I am trying to get growing in my yard. We had a very cold snap in early November and a blizzard came through and burried most of the trees in snow drifts. The drifts stayed all winter long. The last little pieces of ice dissappeared about 2 weeks ago. As the snow melted, I could see that, not only the exposed parts of the trees had turned a rusty brown, but all of the trees' branches had also turned. I noted that at the very bottom of all the trees, there was some green. I am not sure if this green was frozen into the tree or if had begun to come back from brown. After a couple weeks, watering on only the warmest days, I cannot determine if the green I am seeing is increasing, or if I am just, hopefully, optimisticly observing. I am beginning to think that maybe they did NOT survive the Wyoming winter AGAIN. :-( These latest pics were taken on March 16... Do you think these trees are dead??? I think I am noticing more and more green, BUT if I am seeing that, it is happening VERY slowly. As stated before, I may just be hoping to see more green and therefore, I am. I will take more pics in late April and compare. Any green that I do see is limited to the bottom and nearer the trunk. I have also noted just today, that at the base of the trunk, on all trees, the "bark" has split vertically, 4 to 6 inches up from ground level. Is this a bad sign??? Any opinions you experienced guys have to offer is greatly appriciated!! Here's the pics......

They will be behind the Rhododendrums , and they will get more sun during the colder wheather, The sun is minimal , I was wondering what I can plant behind the Rhodies that will get big with no sun. I need a backup plan for these older rhodies that are 10 ft tall and 6 ft wide ,I need privacy.
