My daily bean harvest -- pic
Comments (16)sinfonian A 1 minute blanch might work for skinny beans, but these are whoppers, some as long as 10-11 inches, wide and thick to boot! I break them into pieces with my hands, and those that don't snap easily get shelled. As they process in the boiling water, I can hear the air escaping from them -- they softly pop. Since they're partially cooked for 7 minutes, I'll cook them another 10 minutes or so when thawed. And yes, each to his own. I discovered the corn-freezing thing years and years ago. I hurriedly bought a bushel of corn on my way home from a park with my kids and realized I just didn't have time to shuck and blanch it. So I dumped the whole basket into a garbage bag and put it in the freezer in the garage. I forgot about it until around Thanksgiving, and decided to see if the kids would eat it. It was actually delicious, tender, sweet, and crisp. Since then I've read that others do the same thing -- freeze it in the husks. It works for me and avoids that tedious job of husking everything all at the same time and then blanching it. Husking what you plan to eat that night isn't such a chore!...See MoreWANTED: Heirloom seeds, Peas or Beans

Comments (10)Indeed. Grow them. Eat them. Multiply seed. Pass seed on to others. Passing seed on to someone like Gardenlad is especially good, since you can know that it will be preserved and even passed on to others who will agree to maintain it. One never knows what the future holds. I lost our family heirlooms (at least most of them) when we lived and worked outside the U.S.A. for some time, but was able to get them back through members of the Seed Savers Exchange who had received samples from me beforehand. This is good. But never assume that someone else is going to maintain your family heirlooms. They aren't as precious to others as they are to you. I sent in a number of heirlooms, to the SSE, over 20 years ago (direct to Decorah, not through other members), and I'm still waiting and hoping that they will resurface. So, above all else, make it a priority to preserve these precious gifts from your uncles. George...See MoreHey ChubbyRat! Look at my magic beans! (Pics)
Comments (9)Man, I wish I had seen that before we took down our tower that held our old TV antennae. I could have done that from our deck. It's brilliant! And what a lovely view you have, too! Thank you for the extra photos. You have obviously been getting rain, you're so green and lush right now! We are so crispy and dry....See MoreUser
