Hey ChubbyRat! Look at my magic beans! (Pics)

You sent me a jar of your Hyacinth Beans a few years ago. I shared them with a bunch of my friends but up here they haven't done too well. EXCEPT for this year! I have a 25 foot pole in my backyard that holds up my clothesline. DH planted a bunch of your magic beans and put up some chicken wire to encourage them to go up. And go up they did! They are almost to the top! WooHoo! I feel like Jack and the Beanstalk!

Notice I said "I'm sure" but not "You definitely can." I am aware there are poisonous legumes and I have an interest in ID'ing and eating wild edible plants, so I am aware of the rule to treat an unknown plant as poison till it is positively identified. I guess that is bizarre advice now that I look back at my post. I wasn't thinking much and just was being lazy and wanted to get the post over with... :P But the reason I think it is probably edible is because I wouldn't expect the company to sell a poisonous species "magic bean" since most people expect beans to be edible and the concept of magic beans is something that kids would be interested in. So I'm not saying it's definitely edible for sure. I just don't see why it wouldn't be. But get a positive ID on the plant first just to be sure. Hope that clears things up. ;)

My bok choy never set seed pods that huge, but there are lots of varieties out there. Brassicas are a crazy family with lots of variety, but I'll second (third?) the notion that it is a brassica. The flowers and podding system look exactly like my kale when it goes to seed, but my kale pods are slim, like the size of a spaghetti noodle, and those look the size of pinkie fingers! Maybe you've got some great new variety of brassica that people will grow for the pod :) The dried pods are perfect for seed saving.

Since I see brown frass in the little tunnels and relatively early in the season, the tiny larvae may still be present, feeding in the bean tissue between the upper and lower surfaces of the leaf. You can squish them so that they can't grow up to be the very small adult fly, moth, or beetle, depending upon the species. Or, you can remove the leaf and throw it away (in the garbage) . If you end up with a terrible infestation, we can go to "plan B". I suggest that you take an affected leaf and hold it up to the light to learn a bit more about leaf miners. You can also use Google to do a tiny bit of research on leaf miners in general or leaf miners on beans.

Ack! dlm, I forgot to post back. First, my gray is a Dove Gray (light). In darker areas it's a mid-level, maybe a battleship gray? Charlie's soap powder form, diluted in water, scrubbed, let it sit, scrubbed again, wiped. Probably got it up to 60%. Then I did a different section with diluted Charlie's soap and Oxyclean scrubbed in on top of that. Let sit maybe 20 min, scrubbed, 'rinsed'. Much better. Not 100% like the light Dove gray at outer perimeters of floor, but easily 80 to 85%. Close enough you have to really be staring at it to see the difference. (Can't get a pic to show it well, shadows from vanity are throwing off grout.) So I'll clean it good that way & immediately seal, and I'll be happy. :) If you want to check it out, I don't know how close this is to you, but if I'm downtown & need some CS I get it Be By Baby (Wrigleyville area). Easy metered parking on side street (I always find a spot - a miracle!). Or you can go to CS website, maybe there's a dealer near you. (Not me, it's either downtown or mail.) I also get through Amazon. Free super saver shipping + $11.50 or so is a good price. (Think it's about $14 at Be By Baby). I wasn't impressed with their bottled spot treatment. For the price I just put a scoop (abt 1TB) of powder in a spray bottle, make my own, works just as well.

Yeah! Should be blooming soon,then they are really pretty! Unfortunately mine didn't do good this year! It's been so hot and I always plant them to grow up the chainlink fence...this year it burnt them.Oh well,I still have tons of seeds and next year will be better! I love those beans!

Deb, we have never gotten flowers. Maybe it gets too cold up here? Or maybe this will be my year!!!!!

Deb-You sent me some beans one time too.I planted them one year in pots on my deck but they didn't do much.Too hot and dry that year I think.I wonder if they would grow up here(Albuquerque)? Would it be too much trouble to send me some more? I'll pay the postage.

Nice magic beans, girl! But how do you reach up that high to hang your laundry, that's MY question! lol I see a pulley system there, I think... Are you standing on a deck or something? That's a GREAT idea!

Yes I have a walkout basement and my deck is really a 2nd floor in the back while being the main level in the front. My washer & dryer are on the main floor and I just hang from the deck. I LOVE IT!

Man, I wish I had seen that before we took down our tower that held our old TV antennae. I could have done that from our deck. It's brilliant! And what a lovely view you have, too! Thank you for the extra photos.

You have obviously been getting rain, you're so green and lush right now! We are so crispy and dry.
