OT: any suggestion on carpet for bedrooms and stairs?
Comments (15)i just ordered the Mohawk smartstrand. There's much more about in in the flooring forum, if you're interested. We went with one of the carpet companies in Dalton, GA, and their price on it was unbelievable compared to Home Depot. They all have different names, and you have to do some detective work to figure out which HD ones are the equivalent to the carpet/flooring store ones. The internet stores from Dalton are quite helpful. I went with Owen Carpet, which has been bought by a larger place. My parents actually went down there just to check it out, and said it was fine, just like all the other places in Dalton. Shipping was about the same as tax for me, but the pricing difference per sq yard was approx. 30%. Basically you figure out how much you need, and which colors you want, and they then call Mohawk, and find out how much Mohawk has in stock of that carpet in that color. You can either wait for *your* color, or if you aren't too choosy and are pressed for time, then give them several colors, and they will figure out which one will ship the soonest. if you need a roll vs getting a 'cut' piece, then the price goes down, since they don't have to cut it. It usually comes in 12 ft length rolls, and are different lengths, since other people have had pieces 'cut' from the roll. I didn't go with the carpet padding that would increase the Mohawk warranty, but just went with their generic 9lb pad with a moisture barrier, and it was also much less expensive than HD, at under $3/sq yd. Now, if only my contractor would actually get it installed, so I can see it!!...See More2 options for bedroom/bath addition - which is best?
Comments (14)I'm reposting this from the OP's original thread as another option. The OP sent me the plans and I played around with them a bit more. I understood that she couldn't really change the exterior except for the bump out where her bathroom was. I got rid of that and moved it in so the width is the same but without the bump out in the upper right corner. She has some real concerns about this version and isn't sure she wants to give up some things as she'll comment later. However here are the changes I made: I made the hall a straight run from the foyer. No more maneuvering around a jog. Bedroom 1 is the same size but now the bathroom for bedroom 1 is next to it as opposed to having to walk across the hallway. I didn't put it in, but there could also be a pocket door from bedroom one into the bathroom so the au pair wouldn't even have to go into the hallway. However now at least it's right next to the bedroom. Also now there's a window in the room. I moved the laundry to the other side of the au pair's bedroom. This room now has a window and also now has a much shorter run for the dryer. In the laundry the cabinets opposite the washer/dryer can be used not only for additional storage but also as a broom closet and linen closet. I flipped the master bedroom to be on the living room wall. The master is now a foot shorter (but still deep enough for a king sized bed and a dresser on the opposite wall). My thinking was the living room has cabinets that would help block any noise and now the master bathroom and the master closet will act as noise blockers between the boys bedroom and the master. The master toilet room became a bit narrower but is still about 37-38" wide. If the OP doesn't get a 6' tub they can make the shower a bit longer. The boy's bedroom is the same size as before and while I don't love the idea of a bathroom taking up a corner, I couldn't figure out how to put it between the boy's bedroom and the playroom without losing too much space. The playroom now becomes a separate sanctuary where the boys enter their bedroom from the playroom. The problem lies in that now the playroom is smaller. I'll let the OP add her thoughts. bardzil, had suggested to me concerns about turning the plan into a four bedroom house instead. Here is my suggestion for if she ever wanted to turn it into a 4 bedroom house. However the smaller playroom is still an issue but then again living where she does, I'm guessing the boys will spend lots of time outdoors? (In this version, I didn't add in the window changes.)...See MoreCan't find any good reviews of carpet. Any suggestions?
Comments (17)Stanton, Mashland, Karastan (higher end) are wonderful products, and I would go wool. However, Smart Strand is a good medium priced option. Agree with Elizabeth B…the padding makes a huge difference. I always recommend SmartStep. It has a waterproof barrier which keeps spills (and other liquids…(woof, woof) from seeping into the pad. Ever tried to remove a stain from a rug, think you have accomplished it and two days later it is back? It is because the culprit is in the pad and not the rug. If. the pad needs to be seemed, have the seem duct taped or as I have always called the product DuckTape....See MoreSuggestions/advice to move entrance to bedroom away from top of stairs
Comments (82)nhb22 Thanks for your input and your house looks beautiful. If I’m understanding your drawing the way your door opens does not put the first footstep at the top step. That’s where my concern is. Lori - Correct. It was my brothers bedroom, in my childhood home, that had the same set-up as yours. The bathroom was across the hall just as yours is. The only difference was that the staircase was opened with a railing on the opposite side and the hallway was much wider. See drawing. I still had a concern about my own set-up, and wanted to share my building experience. When you walk out of the bedroom, and step right, the stairs are there. Below is a better photo of my set-up. Although it has worked fine, I do like what has been proposed for your issue. Good luck!!!...See More1929Spanish-GW
