Who has Mandevilla, I have some questions

We have two big Mandevilla on the porch, one has gone clear to the ceiling. It's getting time to bring them inside, so how much should they be cut back, how often to water in the winter? Thanks

I cut mine back to about 3 nodes or to about a foot from the soil line then let them go dormant. If winter seems to have come early and lasting long, I may give them a little water in February.

Mine are in the atrium and continue to grow in our mild winter . I do cut back the vines that have gotten messy and over grown .

Welcome! Stick a chopstick in the soil. Pull it out every once in a while. If the end of it is moist, don't water. If it's dry, water. You don't want to water on a schedule, only when the tree needs it. Hope you're keeping it outdoors!

Pothos has been a super easy, tough plant, for me. It just needs even moisture, and bright light. Do not expect it to do well with a great deal of Sun. But if I were trying to grow Mandevilla, in the Winter, I would worry about white fly. A most persistent little pest. There may be some systemic insecticide you can add, carefully following instructions, to hold the insect off. I have damaged plants by careless use of systemics. And some plants are sensitive about hours of light. Cannot say that Mandevilla would even bloom with less than 12 hours.

1. both are normally grown from transplants, not direct seeding. With this late start adding the time required to grow from seed would put you far into the high heat of a Georgia summer before they are ready to bloom and that heat will insure little to no production. As for trying to germinate in the same pot it would grow in for its entire life? No, never recommended for many many reasons that would take pages to cover. Simply put, it doesn't work just as putting a baby in adult clothing and expecting him to drive himself to pre-school doesn't work. ;-) 2. yes you will need a growing mix like MG Potting Mix and you will have to supplement the nutrients regularly. For that plant you will need a 10-15 gallon pot. 3. what can you do to keep it small and still produce fruit? Nothing, it isn't possible. Genetics rule and that variety is genetically quite large and quite tall IF you want fruit from it. If you want a plant to stay quite small and still bear fruit then pick another variety that fits your conditions and there are many available. It is the growing conditions you can provide that dictate what varieties will work for you. When those conditions are severely limited so are your choices IF you want a chance at success. Agreed, the first step here is taking the escutcheon off--that will probably answer your question. I'd guess that it's more likely to be a deteriorating gasket (that's what ours looked like when it started to go) than mold if you can't easily clean it off, but you won't know until you look. if it is a gasket, it's not hard to replace them.

I had no clue you could bring it back from one growing season to another! We have one every summer, in remembrance of my mom. You mean, we can bring it in and it'll come back to life next summer? Learn something new every day!

Yes, Julie. I have several that I winter over in my heated garage. I cut the vines back to about a foot and continue to trim through the winter. I water once a month, just about two cups to a 3-gallon pot.

I had a lovely one growing on a wall of my previous house and wasn't worried because we have mild winter temps. It was beautiful. And yep, we had many days of lower than average temps that year and I lost it. Am afraid to try again.

I have one on a trellis. One year I brought it in, trellis and all! It was a mess with the dropped leaves, but did survive the winter. It took a very long time in the spring/summer for it to get flowers, so now I don't bother. I can buy them inexpensively at Produce Junction and they grow and blossom like crazy.

I wintered a couple indoors one winter. The dead leaves were such a PITA and the next summer it didn't bloom much. Perhaps I should have cut it back.

Not going to go through the trouble again.

I have kept mine in front of a south window, in a cool room, watered about every 7-10 days. Cut back just to manage the room available. It doesn't go dormant for me. It never bloomed last year after overwintering, and I almost threw it out, but this year has been loaded with blossoms.

It is true, they are not costly, but I just hate to throw out a good plant. Some of my geraniums are nearly 10 years old.

I brought one in for the winter once, but couldn't get it to rebloom the next year.

I realize that tropicals don't over-winter well in colder weather, but I hate how house plants have become throw-away items. Orchids, for example. People used to take pride in their ability to grow house plants and make them thrive.
