I coach high school baseball and the field is maintained by the county, and yesterday they came and scapled it up pretty bad it is Oct. should I just oveseed with rye.

Depends on your temps & location. If you still have 80 degree heat & 8 hour days, it should be back in a few weeks. If it's already cooling off too much or you're too far north, then you may want to overseed to get you through the season.

Do you have pictures? Did they use a reel mower? What is the height of cut? Does the county do ALL the maintenance of the field or just mowing? How old is the field? What has been done historically this time of year?

There are a lot of variables at play here, as reeljake already mentioned. If the county fully maintains the field I would presume they have a plan, calling them would give you more input. You don't want to muck around with their plans unknowing. That could cause more problems.

I just ordered a manual reel mower (Great States 16 inch 7-Blade, which is apparently the best manual mower for Bermuda, and better than the Brill and Sunlawns for Bermuda). I though about getting a gas powered reel mower, but decided again it because by lawn has a lot of curves and turns and thought that a manual reel would be easier to maneuvier. I plan on scalping with my gas powered rotary at lowest setting, and then use the new reel mower to further cut it down to 0.5 inches (and keep mowing it at that height at least 2x per week, if possible - which will be a big change from 3 inches last year). My lawn is also a little bumpy in some areas, and I plan on leveling with sand (type unknown) in June.

Dead? It's an excellent guide and people have often been directed to it over the years with rave reviews and results. I wish there were comprehensive guides like this written by such a knowledgeable and experienced person for all the turf types, especially for cool season grasses. I could have used one and, admittedly, probably still do. :) Any cool season grass sod farmers out there?

torxx, well your PH is darn near perfect, and the pics that heelsfan posted for you speak a thousand words. First you grass looks pretty good. Does any pattern strike you as odd? Geometric patterns are not normal in nature. Notice how the brown streaks are lined up in parallel with the wheel marks of you reel mower right in the middle of the blade cutting area. Then look at the seed head pinched between your fingers. Notice the stem of the seed head between your fingers is good and green up to almost the end, then it just turns brown. All are classic signs of a dull or miss-aligned blade that is crushing, bruising, and/or tearing the grass. The stem between your fingers was crushed by the blades rather than cut, the tip died, then turned brown. Get your blades sharpened and fertilize every 30 days with nitrogen only.

I don't see any problem with that at all. It might not look great for a few days, but this isn't baseball season anyway. If it isn't already dormant, it will grow back. If it is not dormant yet, it will be soon.
