This is how a vanity in our MB is, butted against shower. Is this what you're talking about?

I wouldn't. I would build a knee wall and set the glass on top of it. The pic above is that type of setup.

What are you saying you wouldn't do? Leave a gap between the vanity and the glass? Or butt the vanity against the shower glass (without going through)?

Yeah, the photo above doesn't butt up against the glass, it goes through the glass. I planned for a floating vanity that doesn't go quite as low as the one in the photo so there is more open space below the vanity. I'm afraid putting a wall like this at the end of the vanity will kill the floating look. And it reduces the amount of glass which makes the shower look smaller.

Sorry, I wasnt clear,. I would NOT leave a gap between vanity and shower in order to prevent maintenance issues. I have a traditional bathroom.

your point is right on that creating a pony wall and reducing amt of glass would take away from spaciousness look of shower

maybe having 6" space would allow for cleanup and spaciousness illusion you aim for. is vanity going to be against a wall on the other side? Ideally I would center vanity between shower wall and regular wall. I hope this is a little clearer.

For me, regardless of decorating style, not a fan of narrow spaces I can't clean, especially in a bathroom where you have hair, etc.

Butting vanity against glass wall. I guess there is nothing wrong with doing that but it would seem cramped to me. Plus when I'm inside shower, the darkness of the vanity would make shower seem smaller despite it being all glass, the very thing you're trying to avoid.

I want to keep the vanity floating and keep the space open, just like the last photo bossyvossy posted. I love the way that looks. I do not want to finish the vanity with any kind of pony wall.

The question is if what was done in that photo is OK. Just because someone did it and put their photo online doesn't mean it was a good idea or didn't have problems down the line. But this is exactly how I want the shower and vanity to meet. I just don't know how to finish it so that there aren't problems down the road. Any advice on how to do this right?

So the options are to either butt the vanity right up to the glass or figure out the least amount of practical space to leave between the vanity and shower. My glass guy recommends three inches.

Depending on how you want to interpret code regarding the sheet of shower glass being a wall, code says IF there is going to be a gap, the minimum is 4". There's another number, which is a minimum of 15" between a side wall and the center line of the sink. In my jurisdiction, the shower glass is considered a wall and those measurements are enforced. Your mileage may vary.

Yes, they can touch, and yes, a bead of caulk sandwiched between the glass and stone could be useful. It'll act as a cushion of sorts between the glass and stone and it'll prevent seepage between the two.

When I wrote "...a bead of caulk sandwiched between the glass and stone could be useful" I was referring to a bead of caulk between the shower glass wall and the edge of the stone countertop.

I am NOT recommending you coat the entire side of the vanity itself with caulk, if that is indeed what you were asking.

bossyvossy's photo looks great, but I wonder what it looks like from inside the shower?

If it is going to be a glass wall and a floating vanity I would prefer a gap, at least 6" but the bigger the better. Just personal preference.

The vanity probably doesn't look great from inside the shower in bossyvossy's photo. I don't think it will bother me, but I wonder if there is there a way to make it look better so you don't see a dried bead of caulk?

Kinda doubt it and your observation another reason why butting not my first choice,. HST, silicone and maybe caulk come in clear and they dry pretty transparent

If no gap, what if you were to have a counter waterfall go through the glass or be flush with the glass? Too complicated?

You might even build a box that could serve as your niche, so you don't have to interrupt the shower walls ;-)

I don't want to waterfall because that interferes with the floating look and it reduces the amount of glass. I am not opposed to the vanity going into the glass rather than butting against the glass, if this is possible to do without a waterfall. Meaning just have the end of the suspended vanity go into the shower. So it looks like it butts against the glass but actually penetrates the glass. Make sense?

Ours is like debbie1000's photo, except the 1/2 wall only extends about 28" from the wall (i.e., 6" past the 22" deep vanity), and about 6" above the height of the vanity. We did that for 2 reasons: (1) we can't expand the size of the bathroom, so limited in where things can fit; (2) the shower valves and a niche are hidden on the shower side of the half wall (you can open the shower door to turn on the shower, and not get wet - just wonderful). A 2nd niche is low on the perpendicular wall - thus the half wall actually hides from view 2 niches and the valves. (A 3rd niche is up higher, so you see that one.) Very functional, and I think ours looks great. But everyone's opinion of good looking is different. HTH
