Please help with kitchen design

Hello,

We are having an extension built, and the resulting space is proving a little awkward to lay out cabinets for, though there is no shortage of space. I feel the answer is a peninsula rather than an island, but i really don't want to have to carry all the shopping all the way round to the back of the kitchen for access, and I want to be able to run out into the garden if future children are getting into trouble... ground floor plans

I think it is a big improvement. I don't like the bar table where it is as it seems like a safety hazard in the oven area. Why did you ditch the island? I think you would find the island (centered in the room) very convenient for prepping and using the cooktop. I notice on the left of the DW you have a shallow cab turned sideways. Do you have plans for that cab? I think a narrow cab with drawers facing forward might be better - it is the perfect place for dishtowels, hot pads and plastic wraps. Think of it like this... Your fridge wall is the storage zone (yes, even with the oven there), to the left of the sink is the clean-up zone where you would want to store those towels and food storage things. To the right of the sink (and behind it as well - if you bring in an island) is the prep zone and the range is the hot zone. Also, in a perfect world I would like to see the cooktop move down a bit to the right in order to give you more space between the sink and cooktop, which is prime food-prep real estate. However, I see that would mean you have to get two smaller cabinets instead of one nice wide one and you might not want to do that. Although, it might not matter. Where do you plan on storing your pots and pans? The wide drawers are great for that. Then again, how about a pot rack over the island that I keep trying to bring back? Nicole

I like to see the double ovens and cooktop nearer each other...if you're using both at the same time it's easier to keep an eye on things instead of running back and forth. Is it possible to put the fridge at the end of the sink run near the dining room? If you intend to put glassware in the upper next to the cooktop, will you be able to stand there and unload the DW? How about an island instead of a peninsula...this would give you more wall space. As far as the windows...I think 12-18" of wall above would look good....they might look squatty with more wall space...do a mockup with newspaper for the window and see how it looks. And this has to do with lifestyle....I would not want my master BR next to the great room...one person wants to turn in early or take a nap, while the other wants to watch TV....could be noisy. If you flip flop the MBR and MBath it will make for a quieter bedroom.

Since the Stages sinks have integrated cutting boards and prep accessories, I think it will be functional in the island, especially if you can make the island longer. It occurred to me that if you can move the entry as far to the right as possible, you could have a more direct route from back door to kitchen, and separate the clean-up and prep/cooking zones, while still having a secondary prep zone on the end of the island, convenient to water at the clean-up sink. This plan would also eliminate the blind corner, and leave room for the second oven. If you decide on the smart oven, it and a MW (or is it a combo?) could be located just inside the entry. (See alternate plan.) The drawback would be that the walk to the pantry is a little farther from the primary prep zone. Can you cut back or remove the jog at the end of the hallway wall? That would give you a more space for the range wall. Alternately, you could have a shared trash pull-out on the corner by the range, and have a MW drawer across from the fridge. If you don't opt for the second oven beside the entry, there will be room for an extra prep zone beside the clean-up sink.

Your Pantry would be next room leaving the kitchen towards your family room! It can be configured how you need to based on your large entryway, and this pass-through doorway. I used your dimensions to create this kitchen. As might imagine an Island just gives it a slightly more crowded feel, unless you wanted a non-fixed island, like a piece of furniture that wasnt too large, which wouldnt be too bad I suppose! Mike

I'd extend the bottom wall to include a pantry, which will also give you more wall space for a fridge and MW. Recessing the fridge will add to floor space, and at roughly 10.5' x 11.5', I'd skip the island or peninsula.

I guessed at the window measurement and exact location, so this plan might need to be adjusted. Dishes can go in the drawers and upper to the right of the DW. If you need a separate cooktop and ovens, wall ovens could be subbed for the MW, beside the fridge:

ETA, you could also have a wide galley, with extra deep cabinets, which would give you a nice prep space beside the sink. In that case a standard fridge would not need to be recessed:

I like MamaGoose's first layout. It keeps the Prep and Cooking Zones together without having to cross a wide aisle b/w them. It also puts the trash pullout in both zones - something I wish I had done (I have to traipse across a 6' aisle to get to my trash pullout from the Prep Zone and the Cooking Zone - often dripping all the way. It's my biggest "regret" in my Kitchen).

How do you plan to use or furnish the adjacent space? It's labeled as breakfast and dining room, but I doubt you'd want two sets of tables and chairs. If some of that space is available, you may have some other layout possibilities.
