Jade tree (Crassula ovata & arborescens) as bonsai ... pics
Comments (72)Hi Ben.. I live in a 3rd story apartment in London Over the past few years I have been growing some Crassula to provide partial window screening.. My original plan was to have them shaped something like African savannah trees. It has sort of worked.. Although not strictly savannah like, this one has turn out best I think.. One problem I have is the older leaves tend to fold down, which is not bad, but not so savannah like. I would prefer if they were more horizontal. Any advice on that? Great page by the way, there are many useful tips here.. Ian...See MorePlease help me with my Jade (Crassula ovata)
Comments (5)Great job, Busa. Avoiding peat-moss and peat-based potting muck is the best thing! Your research and ingredient-hunt really paid off. Your Jade will be so much healthier and far more vigorous now. It will, no doubt, reward you with a growth spurt, too. Just a couple quick things: 1. After re-potting, it's best to wait 3-5 days to water the container - this allows any damaged roots to form a callus, which will help prevent root-rot and encourage root-growth. 2. It's also best to give your Jade a bit of protection from the direct sun while it is acclimating to its new pot and re-establishing its roots. Until it's settled, it simply won't be using sunlight or moisture as readily as it had been. As Puglvr wrote, you'll want the Jade in full sun *eventually*....but move it into direct sun gradually, a couple hours a day. 3. Bugs. Plants outdoors enjoy the natural predators (beneficial insects) that take care of pests. The best thing for your Jade will be summering outside. The healthier your Jade is when it goes back inside, the better it will do over winter. 4. Watering. I wait until the Jade's leaves feel soft. Then I water the following morning, allowing the Jade to make use of the moisture over the entire day. If one were to water at night, for instance, the moisture might sit around the roots; at best, doing nothing; at worst, compromising the roots. During the growing season, one can water a good Gritty mix with near impugnity. Chance of rot is slim. Josh...See MoreMy jades

Comments (9)My TC cactus has been outside for at least couple of weeks of low nighttime temps, about 45-50*F. Didn't freeze, didn't die - started to grow new leaves:And during Summer, it was in full sun since it is in same pot with Euphorbia milii - obviously, we don't have heat and as strong sunlight as TX, but summer temps are in high eighties. It gets darker color, but doesn't die from sun. In your TX sun & heat, it may fry. I am not saying you should do the same, just pointing out that many succulents are quite resilient. E. milii flowers didn't 'like' colder temps, that is when I brought them in - flowers looked like this (photos from Nov. 6/17):Euphorbias flowers are 'recovering' now, and TC has lots of buds - photos below just taken (sorry, for the photo quality :) TC will not bloom before Christmas, maybe even after - but it is doing well. Here are temps on Nov 5th & 6th (in *C) and were same since Oct. 25th:...See MoreKieran Francis
