Should I combine the pantry / scullery with the laundry room or no?

Didn't know which board to post this in so am cross-posting. I am renovating a home and can have either a combined or separate pantry / scullery and laundry room. There are pros and cons to each - I like open and less rooms but don't want to negatively impact resale value or people think it's awkward there aren't two rooms. Right now there is a 36" pocket door separating them so that might be ok but not sure...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I think I'd be mostly concerned with the moisture in the air from the laundry crossing over to the pantry. We are putting in a second fridge in our pantry and have to install a fan to run most of the time to keep moisture out of the air for food quality and preservation.

I'd keep the two rooms separate. Our laundry room stays neat and organized but wouldn't want to see dirty clothes so close to food being prepared and stored. The pocket doors give you, and future owners, the option to close them. Our new walk in pantry is off our kitchen similarly and we have yet to close the glass pocket door in a month. Our laundry room is on the opposite side of the house but we do close the door to help with sound.

Without seeing the entire first floor, I wonder how the mudroom/lockers would be used.

Although, if you are going to be carrying laundry via a basket to the chute... maybe you don't want it via the bathroom since that door (into the bathroom) is smaller than the door to the firepole entrance. But, I don't think I'd want to have to go clear to the end of the firepole entrance room to get to the chute either. Maybe a compromise, to keep your window (I had to get rid of windows): Move your chute closer to the door rather than having it in the far corner. Having cabinetry/chute entry near the door of your laundry room will also help to make that feel a little less claustrophobic upon entering that room than having a 3'deep freezer or a 2'deep, tall storage cabinet there. Maybe it looks like this when you enter, going clockwise (I know, I am throwing a lot of ideas out there, but you have a lot of space!) from door, left along wall A: chute above, cabinet/counter below tall closet storage at far corner of wall A and B open under the window (so this room would kind of be galley style) sink in corner of wall B/C (again, straight counter) then washer/dryer in your preferred order then Freezer (opposite entry door) u-shape walk in pantry as you drew per my other suggestion above. You get to keep the window on the left wall.

Sounds like a good idea. If we were to ever do a gut the house to the studs type renovation, I'd do the exact same thing as you. The inner core of our 2nd floor have seperate master bath/laundry room and linen closet which all share walls. None of the rooms by themselves are very large. After looking at the space you realize the walls take up a lot of physical space and create layout limitations inside each small room. One big room with access from the master bedroom and hall near the kids rooms would have worked out better.

they have vinyl or whatever it is! That is soft and pliable. It's really pretty. We are going to use it for the church sacristy. Some of the choices look like slate. I saw it at either Lowe's or Home Depot. It would do well on an uneven floor. Wish I could come over and help you fix up your laundry space : ))) I remember those days when I lived on the 3rd floor and did laundry in a basement with no windows. Having a laundry room off the kitchen is my favorite thing about our house. Wishing you a pretty laundry room soon!

I'd want it to stay separate. What is that window in the laundry facing? Would it be possible to have a door on that wall? I'd put a door across from the pocket door and put the washer dryer to the longest exterior wall. Then you could probably fit a sink in there somewhere. If you move the doors more to the center then you have space for a whole wall of cabinets on the interior wall. You could do a tall cabinet for cleaning supplies, brooms, etc. Then have a folding counter if you like. I'd move the pocket door from kitchen into the pantry up as much as you can. As it is now, you don't have anywhere for a lightswitch in the pantry or the laundry. If you add a 36" exterior door from the laundry then you can have the pocket doors be 30". I'd use the wall inside the pantry to hang aprons or have a shelf for cookbooks or even wine. Also, think about how you will use the pantry. A sink is good if you will actually work in there, but if not then a sink in the laundry is better. You can use that sink for messy stuff. I use the sink in my laundry to wash dogs, arrange flowers, clean bird feeders, wash up from crafty stuff, clean the grill grates, etc.

I don't have a 'pantry' -- which to me means *food-related storage*. I have a back hall with laundry at one end and at the other end, a 3 X 9 closet w/two 36" doors across from a powder room. There's a window at the laundry end and a half-glass door to rear yard at the other end. The hall is bisected by doors to garage and to kitchen. (You walk through the back hall, but not through the laundry area.)

I don't see that you'd gain much of anything by combining the rooms. Will you lose the window at the bottom of your plan?

Where is the Family Entry? How do you bring groceries into the house?

I would definitely keep them separate. The moisture in a laundry room would not be a good mix with food storage of a pantry. On a side note, I don't think mud room lockers would be very useful tucked back there. I wouldn't want my kids traipsing through the pantry several times a day. Mud room lockers are only effective if they are in a convenient location by the entrance, IMO.

Definitely keep the rooms separate. My laundry and pantry are in the same room and sometimes the food takes on a chemical taste (esp.. unopened bags of chips).

Since people are continuing to post on this thread instead of the one on Kitchens, I'll re-post my comments here...

Where will you be bringing the groceries into the house?

How do these rooms relate to the rest of the floor and house?

In general, separate rooms are better - for a more practical reason. Pantries should be cool, dry, and dark. Laundry Rooms are none of those! In particular, it is not a good idea to mix heat and moisture with your pantry items - at least not if you want them to last!

Aesthetically, I would not want someone who needed to go into my pantry to also see my dirty laundry (or even clean laundry)!

And yes, it would be an issue for me if I was considering buying your house.

Thanks for all the great advice. I will post the full kitchen layout in the kitchen forum - is there a board to get general advice on the rest of the house layout? It is a 1938 home so some constraints exist (big one being rear entry only through family room / no mudroom since the driveway is on the opposite side and this laundry pantry room (originally servant quarters) being tucked away at front of house off the kitchen.

I'll definitely not combine the rooms and will rethink the lockers/cabinet arrangement. I'll link to the full kitchen layout when I post it. Thanks!
