My latest project... Daybed???s
Comments (28)You're welcome! For me, it was worth the extra expense to get an authentic looking and quality iron bed. I bought my DS a Wesley Allen bed before I found Charles P and it looks nice, it's a good bed, but it's very lightweight compared to this daybed and my DD2's antique iron bed. Charles P has free shipping right now and I might be mistaken but I don't think I was charged tax, since they're back east. I did wait a few weeks extra b/c I ordered it in a non-standard finish so they made one just for me, but it wasn't a long wait. Another option is Loading Dock Antiques where I bought my DD2's antique iron bed, but they don't usually have many daybeds. You can get a custom finish though if you decide to use a twin. They sandblasted mine to get the old paint off and repainted in a chippy, glazed antique white finish. It's a mom and pop shop (literally), and the wife would call me and send photos during the finishing process. Since it's an antique, it's a few inches wider than a standard twin, but it was easy and inexpensive to order a custom-size bunkie board from a local mattress manufacturer. With the custom finish, it was about the same price as the daybed. I LOVE both beds. Comments (22)We have had air beds, and most acquire a small pin hole quickly, and have to be blown up at least once during the night. This makes for uncomfortable sleeping. Since my daughter and son in law were coming we wrestled with the bed situation. Bought 2 cots, like in the link. Doug slept fine, but Lori couldn't get comfy. I ended up borrowing a memory foam mattress topper from a friend, and Lori said it was better, but honest, not good. So we are back to square one. I am thinking wallbed, but crinch at the cost. However, we do want Lori to come back, and prolly go for a wall bed. Personally I sleep fine on my big agnes insulated aircore camping mat, but know, that the majority would prefer something off the floor. The reason we don't have a traditional bed is space. The room our guests get to sleep in is our workout room, my computer room and the sewing room all rolled in to one. Comments (7)I made my daybed cover out of a full-sized comforter because I couldn't find a well-made, not cheap-looking cover that I felt would work in my Western guest room. Finished, it looked great (IMO) and fit like a glove over the bed. The problem was that once off, my guests would inevitably leave it folded up on the floor or on the easy chair throughout their stay. It was too much of a bother to put it back on every day! It was also very hard to launder it once they left. So, I bought a nice looking, easy to launder, thin, quilted cotton comforter and have packed the original cover away. I'll probably end up donating it to Goodwill. I used to keep sheets and a blanket or down comforter on the bed, so that it was ready to go for any guests, but now don't. I like to sleep on sheets that smell fresh and clean, and I think they loose that freshness after a while. Since we never have unexpected company, I now just put on freshly laundered linens the day (or day before) my company arrives. As for the new, thin cover, I wash it after every guest leaves. Another problem I encountered is that all my throw pillows also ended up on the floor while guests were staying here. I finally solved that problem by buying a large woven basket to hold all the pillows at night and just make a point of mentioning that it's to hold any pillows. We don't have company every month and the guest room, now with a different furniture layout than in the pic below, is also my study. I've become very frustrated with the daybed lately. I find it too high to comfortably use as sofa and end up sitting on my very comfortable leather easy chair (not pictured below) instead. I'm ready to rethink the room. I'm planning on selling the oak daybed and trundle and buying one of those very good quality automatic airbeds that I can collapse and store in the walk-in closet when not in use. Sorry, I'm most likely giving you more info than you wanted. As you can probably tell, I'm not a fan of my daybed today (LOL). Lynn My "Before" guest room:...See MoreDay bed for 11 year old boy?
Comments (11)I bought my son a daybed when he was ..16 I guess? And he saw it as a huge upgrade and said "oh wow it's so grown up!" I must say though that my son is easy to please, in many instances. It's twin btw He's a thin boy, medium height, now he's 19, and it's good enough for both him and girllfriend when they come for a break from college. The girlfriend is slightly taller than him) (just to add -not that you need that info-that first time her visiting, it was a guest room for a young lady..then the request was put in..then I said she should clear it up with her parents..ok you get the picture-the bed is big and comfortable enough)) With daybed you control the mattress same as with regular bed, which is cool, 'cause frankly I'm very glad I got ours on huge sale, they wanted 1200$ or so for the bed that I with lots of patient waiting was able to buy for 400$-and let me tell you, 400$ reflects its quality more..Or so I think. But it looks good, and holds the mattress, Ours is from West Elm. It doesn't have the trundle so it's normal height We have another daybed with a trundle in a guest room, that one is higher. It's somehow very cool to fall asleep on, (unless one is elderly and it's too high and then I use a trundle if needed) but I wouldn't say it prompts one to use it more like a sofa. While lower daybed does. As for making the bed-all my childhood I would strip the bedding off in the morning, make the sofa bed look like a sofa, and pretty one too (my Grandma had a whole system I had to follow) , then put all the bedding back at night. Both me and my brother's bed . And on school breaks, I had to do the same for rest of sleeping spaces in the house.. We didn't have dedicated bedrooms with beds that looked like beds, so there you go. Matter of minutes, really. I agree that with bunk beds, it's harder. Well to me it's harder-I'm a small woman who doesn't like to climb anymore))...See MoreMDLN
