I agree that thing is too round to be a rock. I have no idea what type of critter it is though if it's not a rock

Is it a snail or hermit crab?

If you look at the center of that round thing, you might spy and eye (a rhyme!). Could that be a reptile that is curled tighter than we usually see?

It looks like a rolly polly bug to me all rolled up. The center looks like you can see the edges of the segments.

Good job guys! It is the round object in the picture. A rock ptarmigan. If you see that dark black spot, that's its left eye and its beak is pointing down at about 8 o'clock.

This is a different one but it will give you an idea of what they look like all puffed out.

Oh that's cool. We have ptarmigans here in Newfoundland but I've never seen one. They turn white in the winter.
