I'm Lazy--What can you root in plain old water???
Comments (174)It's not appropriate to pitch a particular brand or type of rooting hormone because different plant species respond to different chemicals. The most effective concentration levels of rooting aids vary by species and type of cutting and the most effective chemical to use also varies primarily by6 plant species and can be much more important than concentration levels; so, it is a combination of the concentration AND the choice of chemical + type of cutting and time of year that determines the effectiveness of a rooting chemical. Rooting aids are synthesized forms of the plant hormone/growth regulator 'auxin'. Indole butyric acid (IBA) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) are the two most common chemicals that have been found to be reliable in the promotion of rooting in cuttings. IBA is widely applied in general use because it is non-toxic to most plants over a wide range and promotes root growth in a large number of plant species. Some plants respond better to either IBA or NAA, some respond to ONLY one or the other, some may have a toxic reaction to one but not the other which will lead to poor or no growth and actually, mortality; and, some respond best to combinations of both chemicals, or to other variations of either IBA or NAA based on K (potassium). Both IBA and NAA are commonly available in talc or in liquid formulations of varying concentrations. I do lots of propagating of several hard-to-root species, but only use a rooting aid occasionally for the most difficult. As a generalization, you should know on a per plant basis which chemical and concentration is most apt to be effective before applying it. I have found it mostly unnecessary. Learning a little about the cultural conditions cuttings prefer and some other tricks (like methods of wounding) along with cleanliness will add more to what it takes to be successful at propagating (plants) than rooting aids (except in the very hard to root plants). Comments (17)Last night I discovered that I cannot play DVDs with the home edition of Windows 8 - at least not without third party software. I installed VLC, and it will play the DVDs, but without sound. I never learned how to use Windows Media Center, and so I have always used other media players, but they will not work as well with 8. I installed Media Player Classic (my favorite from before), but it will not play DVDs, and it will now only play a few of the FLV files that I have. The ones that will not play on MPC will play on WinAmp, but I would prefer to have one player that would do everything. I guess I'll have to go back to watching DVDs on the TV with a DVD or BluRay player. Or I will try to find an inexpensive way to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. I wish I had been given that option from the beginning. The reason that a DVD player is not included with Windows 8 is that MS expects DVDs to become obsolete in the near future, but Kevin and I both do not believe that to be the case. Kevin should know since he is in DVD sales at Sony, and while sales have already peaked, they are still steady and are a huge business. People still have vinyl records, and so I think DVDs should be expected to be around for a while. Apple removed the DVD drive from their notebooks long ago, and that is another reason I won't buy their products. I'll give you another update when I get this problem resolved. Comments (30)In my limited experience, 3G is often problematic. It's best not to use it unless you must, like in the car, or for those features which only work on 3G. It also saves you bandwidth to use wifi when available. It's possible that your 3G was running slow and timing out before the information made it to the site. Where I live, theoretically we have 3G on all networks and 4G on some, but in reality we're usually on the Edge network or equivalent, which makes it more or less impossible to use it for anything more than text email....See MoreI'm going to vent now.
Comments (49)Wow...someone just gave me the link to this post, and I am both happy and sad at what I've read. How can ANYONE say that humans are *above* animals??? These are not just pets...they are souls. And who is anyone to say or know that animals are "below" us? Just because we can talk and have jobs and blah blah blah? No...that's just plain wrong. Animals are extremely special, and if anything, THEY are more superious than us! As for pets, if someone looks at a dog or cat as "just a pet" that can be easily replaced, then don't get one! Because a time will come when you may have to make a very important decision about healthcare, and that "pet" is better off with someone who will make the right decision. Now, I am in no means a rich person. FAR from it! But my dog (a labrador retriever) was diagnosed with cancer when she was 6 years old (3 years ago). I know most people would not give the dog treatment, and if you don't have the means, then I can completely understand. But for those that say "my dog/cat is part of the family".....would you let your son or daughter suffer and eventually die from cancer without even doing anything to help them, even if it put you in debt?? I don't think so! Then either take out a loan for your dog/cat, or STOP saying they are part of your family. Needless to say, I did the treatment. Yes, I know she wasn't a puppy...but she still had years of life ahead of her, and she deserved those years. She still thanks me every single day for what I did for her...in her own little way. The treatment consisted of spinal surgery to remove the tumor, followed by 3 weeks of radiation treatment. The cost? Altogether it was $12,000. Now, many of you may think I'm crazy, but my dog is still here with me, and she is the most amazing creature I've ever known. There are people that spend that kind of money on materialistic things in a year's time. I mean, who here has more than $12,000 in credit card debt? Who here has that debt from clothes/furniture/etc? Here's my point: Most people don't have to face the decision I had to make. But I hope you can look at what I did and realize that a few hundred dollars for treatment or even just a "check-up" isn't too much if you really love your animal. If you TRULY can't afford treatment for your pet, fine. But really THINK about whether or not you can really *afford* it.....I'll bet you can, you just don't want to, or you can find better things to spend the money on. Thanks for letting me "vent"....See MoreElmer J Fudd
