Do not keep it in coconut forever - eventually coir starts deteriorating, exudes phenols and kills everything. Natural herbicide in a coconut palm grove. I think your plant already starts to show some damage. Root healthy stem tips just in case.

Irina, I'm ignorant, so I'm not arguing...but I do want to point out that coir is a major component of quality orchid mixes these days. Of course, you repot orchids once media starts breaking down...so you may have something there.

My understanding - you have a grace period - and it is several months. Can be that Orchids are immune to it - may be they coexisted with palms before. They are mostly epiphytes, correct? And they do not sit in a constantly humid soil mix - but have their roots in a lose sometimes wet = sometimes dry media - just like in nature - it rains - it dries. So - probably the coir lasts longer.

The low quality coir is plain salty - and it will affect the plants immediately. That's the way how the coconut "meat" is separated from the husk. Good quality coir has sodium rinsed off. So - the damage can happen in several months. I remember purchasing plants at Vancouver gesneriad Convention. The hosting club rented the space in a greenhouse to propagate plants for sale - and the owner of this greenhouse talked them into using his coir mix. Whatever I was able to take cuttings off - cuttings survived - the rest - even i repotted them - slowly deteriorated and died. And it was everybody's problem.

Yes, low quality coir with salt is an issue for orchids too. And yes, it's alternating moisture levels (usually).

Its only the coco liner..nothing is mixed in with coir. A pot is always better then cocoliner I know..but the liner looks so good.

So far so good this summer. Although to conserve and make use of the water, I put other broms under the hanging pot that drips much more water then a pot would.

So,right now it works.

I think you are right - as long as coco liner is on outside, not in a mix - much less damage. I wouldn't go so far that it is harmless - eventually it will start passing phenols back - but you probably can keep it this way for some time. Prtobaby - when you see your liner starting to rot...would be time to get rid of it. I saw a huge Aeschynanthus garrettii growing in a huge pot under a shade at Annie's Annuals - in Richmond CA Climate wise it should be close to Hayward - so you can keep it outside in a dappled shade all the time.
