Great Blue Lobelia

This is my first year with GBL and I decided to buy some wooden stakes to insert into the large pot where I keep the plant (I don't have a yard so must use pots). As some stems got longer I secured them to a stake with gardening twine. But other shorter stems...I began to notice that even though not secured to a stake...it wasn't that the stems were getting too 'leggy' or were flopping over but...the actual stems seemed to have a curved growth pattern...some of the shorter stems go more horizontal and are curved. Is this typical...and maybe they just grow in random directions if not secured to a vertical stake (..a vertical stake which might make the stems more included to grow vertically/straight)?
