Comments (14)Mike's mention of the foam was the first time I ever heard of foam to help insulate plants. It's too late for my trees. Today I found this weather site that I mentioned just before Mike's post. I calculated that this area of the southern most part of Georgia, just north of Jax FL has had about 82 hours of below 32 degrees F since Jan 1st. The majority of the hours have been since Jan 19th with only one 24 hour period with no freeze. Prior to that (since Jan 1) there have been about 18 hours of freeze. I'm going to get outside and wrap the trunks. I already wrapped alot of the limbs that were exposed and have had sheets draped around the trees and small cans heated with candles inbetween the trees. I didn't start early enough. I didn't have enough cans/candles and I don't think that it would have made much difference. The days have been fairly cool but not cold and I've not paid attention to weather reports. I'm feeling very guilty. If any of my citrus survive it will be amazing to me and next fall they'll all be under a homemade greenhouse with the lights and little fans. Comments (22)Hi all, I just came back to the computer after a few days of hard-core tomato-picking and processing, and no computing! (I am already sick of tomatoes.) This has been a fascinating thread to read. Linda, I know well your thoughts on Bt and its destructive power, but I grow three corn crops...early, mid-season and late. Usually the early corn ripens early enough that I don't have to worry about corn earworms or corn borers. But, without Bt, I wouldn't get any mid-season or late corn worth eating. If some desirable caterpillars die in the process, that's unfortunate but that's jsut the way it goes. I try to keep the killing of all insects to a minimum, but there's times it's necessary. I refuse to feel guilty for dusting BT on a tiny portion of our 14 acres, since the rest of the acreage is not treated for anything. OKC1, what incredible helpful advice you offered in your post! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us! I always love reading what you write. Susan, What am AMAZING amount of DE information you packed into one post! I love DE because I know I'd have to use more "hard-core" bug solutions were it not for DE. And, I'm with you on it being a bad year for the moths and butterflies. I'm wondering if it is drought-related? We have fewer butterflies this year than ever, and it is very sporadic. We'll see a few for a couple of days, and then not see any at all for the longest time. And, it is TOO HOT outside for man or beast now, isn't it? Hi again, Linda. I haven't seen any hornworms in the garden yet either, which seems sort of odd. I do have 3 plants out of about 100 that have some sort of damage that certainly looks like hornworm damage, but can't find one of those caterpillars anywhere. And it has to be on the same date every year remember him saying the 22, several times. I think Red is going to kill Tom he won't let him hurt her. I also heard in the conversation between Tom and the girl that Berlin sent their orders. Right as they were in the warehouse. This is by far the best new show on the regular networks. Jasdip I highly recommend it. Every episode has been very good. The actors are great. Crisis is looking good for a new one. I set it to record the series already. Another we absolutely love is Justified and this season has not disappointed. Not to mention how darn good looking Rayland is. I hope it stays good now that Elmore Leonard has died, hopefully the writing will keep on track. She said she knows her mom is not a good mom and she said she is afraid to stand up to her mom because then her mom will hate her and stop calling or seeing her at all. And she said it hurts her when her mom lies to her." This is what I was going to say. I also wish my SD's mom would be the mom she should be.. but then I have also come to realize that "the mom she should be" is a subjective phrase and what "I" think she should be and what "SD" thinks she should be might be very different. I think she's self centered, oblivious to her daughter's feelings, cares more about her boyfriend and impressing him & his kids than her own kids, and that she lacks as a parent because she doesn't visit, call or support SD like I think she should. SD wants to believe she is the greatest mom and that her mom loves her more than anything because her mom tells her that. As an adult, I know that actions speak louder than words and I think at 9 years old, SD should see that too... mom says she loves you but then does this, this and this. But, to point it out to SD would tear her heart out and her mom is already doing that. I can tell that SD is afraid to upset her mom with calling her out on her lies or lack of interest in seeing/talking to SD. They are afraid to make waves and risk losing what little time they get with that parent and it kills me to see her walk on eggshells for a mom that ignores her. But, it helps to get through the 'attitude' and when she ignores me by knowing that she trusts me enough to treat me like crap because she knows I will still love her in spite of it... just like my own children who have all had their moments. It IS a lot harder when you don't have that mother/child bond, but advice and support I've gotten from this forum have been a tremendous help. Another weekend just passed where SD spent half of it with her grandma, not her mom. Her mom has been promising to help her with a school project for over a month and they didn't work on it because she spent half the weekend with grandma and the other half, mom's BF's kids were there so nothing got done. SD's report card came out and with it was a sign up sheet for conferences. BM didn't bother to ask for a conference, she hasn't been to one this year or last school year. But, she bought SD a new outfit and so she's 'the bomb'. I'm the meanie that makes her do her homework, but her grades have improved. My tongue is raw from biting on it....See More
