Online source for fall orders?

I'm looking at purchasing some additional hardwood and fruit trees this fall. I planted this spring and keeping everything alive over the summer was pretty exhausting. I'm thinking fall planting / more root growth might be best.

I have heard that there were often sales in late fall but many of the nurseries don't even seem to have a lot of stock until spring. Any good online source for larger bulk retail orders?

I'm based in Kentucky so I don't think there would be a problem with fall planting of most of the trees. Basically I'd like a mix of trees for the wildlife and then for me and the domestic animals. I'm looking for suppliers of:

General fruit trees mostly: Apple, Pear, Peach

Natives like: Paw Paw, Persimmon, Mayhaw, Crabapple, Chickasaw Plum, Black Tupelo, Wild Pear

And some Swamp Oak, Pecans, Red Oaks, Hickory, Nuttall Oak

as to fruit trees suppliers.. you might want to ask in the fruit forum ...

as to trees.. it might help.. if you told us what kind of trees you are looking for ... and in what size ... etc ...

also.. where are you .. if you want to discuss if fall is proper ... some trees prefer spring ... like oaks in MI ...

also ... now is the time to talk with nursery managers.. to order in stock for spring delivery ...

on some level.. it sounds like you want to order everything from one supplier.. in bulk ... and i bet that will limit what you can buy .. as not every seller specialized in every tree ..

I edited my original post with some more detail. I guess I'm used to the big online nurseries and assumed it would be a one stop shopping type site that would be recommended.

I usually order only from van engelen/john scheepers, but this year I'm trying a couple of new ones, touch of nature and high country gardens, for some fall flowering bulbs, that ve/js don't carry. Some of my purchases in the past have been from a local dutch bulb importer at their retail location. They have always had good stock at a very reasonable price, but last fall's purchases performed very poorly, so I'm skipping them this year. Also purchased 100 daffs from cosco this week, a couple of new varieties that I don't have. They are large, firm bulbs, so we shall see how they perform. Have never purchased bulbs from them or sams or any other big box store before, but others have and were completely satisfied. Rb

While I don't shop mail order from them as they are a half hour drive from me I highly recommend Hughes Water Gardens. They supply many nurseries wholesale and do sell directly to the public as well. Sometimes people will exchange for garden plants, it doesn't have to be pond plants. I have purchased many waterlilies from Kat who sells on various ponding forums and eBay. Always huge for great prices below retail. Be careful on eBay there are many who sell waterlilies that aren't truly named. Here is a link that might be useful: Hughes Water Gardens Online

Cannadoit - Dottie wasn't accusing you of anything. The GardenWeb rules forbid mentioning any business by name, for any reason, under any circumstances. But things have relaxed a bit nowadays and no one seems to be monitoring things. Just don't be surprised if this thread gets pulled. They consider mentioning a company name as a form of advertising, regardless of the intent. As for seeds or plants - I used to shop everywhere online and couldn't wait to see that box waiting for me on the porch when I got home from work. But now that I've lived here for 9 years I know my way around better and can find just about anything I want locally. Even the hard to find obscure organic/heirloom vegetable seeds from Baker Creek are now available off the rack at my favorite downtown Raleigh Garden Center (Logan's). For mainstream summer annuals I shop at all the garden centers on the south side since that's where I live, with Bbs down in Sanford and Campbell Road on Tryon being favorites. For truly unique odd ball stuff I hit Plant Delights which is conveniently nearby. I have one favorite place I still shop at back in my home state of Oklahoma (Bustani Plant Farm) but I usually pick stuff up when I am home visiting relatives. I shop differently now than I did in the past. My garden is pretty full so now I seek out the plant online and look for sources. When I see something that I think will work for me (often from a thread here on Garden Web) I google the heck out of it and track down a source. I have splurged and bought seeds from all over the world that way. But I no longer have favorite seed or plant catalogs.

I agree with you about Grassy Knoll - I've ordered plants from Elizabeth, her variety is amazing, and her plants are all VERY healthy! If you're looking for P. incarnata, Sunlight Gardens in Tennessee is great, too. I ordered three plants from them earlier this year, and I was shocked at how BIG the roots were on these plants. Hi Dyrne, Did you consider one of your local plant sales? I understand that you are in Kentucky. Many of the natives that you seek are sold at this sale on September 24. You might consider the equivalent in your area.

I like to go those plant sales, I usually go to the Mobile Botanical Gardens fall Plantasia sale. The prices can get high though if you need a large quantity.

I like Mail Order Natives. Reasonably priced and I've gotten nothing but very healthy plants from them in the past.

I think I have made an order with Mail Order Natives just about every year for the past decade, always great plants. It seems this year they're sold out on a lot of items for some reason, and their selection isn't quite what it used to be.

About five years ago I ordered 100 Metasequoias from Musser Forests. Think they all leafed out. Gave away ~90 of them at work. One is in my yard now. Two others still in pots. They offer more typical trees also.

I have also made bulk orders from my state Nursery. Think it was 25 Cornus floridas. I killed most trying to graft lol.

Missouri's State Nursery begins accepting orders Oct. 1st. You can buy as few as lots of 10 per and they're dirt cheap. Great seedlings I've always gotten from them. You won't get your fruit trees there but you'll get everything else on your list if you order early. They sell out quickly!

dyrne, I doubt very much that you will find the fruit bearing trees at any time other than the late winter/early spring.
