Best Slicer Tomato
Comments (7)My favorite fresh eating sliced on a plate by itself tomato is Julia child. Its a 4 inch beefsteak that has great flavor, then finishes with a tart and sweet burst. Close seconds for pink tomatoes and I mean that these are really very good, are brandywine pink and Suddeth's and Brandywine OTV. For a black tomato, I also really like black krim for its bold, complex, almost smokey flavor and I find it sweeter than the other blacks. I also like amana orange for its very sweet mild flavor. A good all purpose tomato that a lot of people like is cherokee purple because of its production in addition to taste. My favorite all purpose tomato that does pretty well for slicing and eating fresh is itallian heirlom. It's not quite as flavorful and tasty as the bradywines but its close. It makes a good sauce and is a good canner because of how easily it is peeled. Kevin This post was edited by Kevinitis on Sun, Jan 6, 13 at 0:42...See MoreCan anyone recommend a "spiral slicer"?
Comments (9)I've had the GEFU in my Amazon cart but just can't seem to commit. I only want something for a few dishes like a rice vermicelli miso soup and some Vietnamese dishes. Maybe a cucumber salad when i tire of the usual slices and chunks and wet smooshie gratings. It is small, fits in a drawer easily. Works like a big pencil sharpener. Some like it, some do not. At least the price is way down now. Just tired of gadgets and plastic junk, : ) Here is a link that might be useful: gefu spiral slicer...See MoreI need a mandoline slicer
Comments (24)Another Borner V-slicer owner. I bought a very slightly used one off eBay for a good savings and then, about a year later, found one at a garage sale for a couple of bucks, so I bought that one also. Backup in case anything breaks. What I don't like about the V-slicer is that slicing is confined to predetermined thicknesses (controlled by inserts.) There is no fine-tuning, dial adjustablility. To be truthful, I've only owned one for a couple of years & have only attempted slicing. Haven't explored julienning, etc. As far as slicing, I have problems keeping the veggies situated to get perfect 90 degree cuts. About halfway thru a cuke, I'm getting angled cuts. Also, I've not used it nearly as much as I thought I would...but have found that it earns its keep during harvest season just for making cucumber slices for hamburger dills. Another thing is that my kitchen is dreadful so I have mostly avoided any cooking with much degree of complication. Once I have a somewhat functional kitchen, I'll no doubt have more creativity but suspect that I'll want to upgrade to a mandoline that has more user control. Comments (23)It's the thought that's important to me, not the money. The table saw went back today. Typical man who works with tools story. He got it in a place where there's a big display of flattops and salamanders right when you walk in. They do also have things that are meant for residential use, but are seriously set up for smaller food service. What I learned before I took a walk around the store while they were doing the transaction, is that the reason this slicer isn't recommended for cheese is that it has a smaller motor. I would have thought that cheese was easier to cut through than meat, but apparently it takes more oomph. That's something for you to keep in mind while you're looking....See Moretwo25acres
