In Case any of You Haven't Seen a Luna Moth Emerge & Transform......

This last batch of luna moth caterpillars made their cocoons about a ?month ago, maybe less, and they're emerging, four yesterday, two so far today. Only one had emerged today when I heard one scratching out of its cocoon, so I got my camera just in the nick of time -

I'm always amazed at how quickly their stubs become wings! This was taken less than an hour later -

Here's the other luna moth that had emerged about an hour before. I had always read that only the first lunas to emerge in spring had the burgundy edging, but, at least here, every generation has that edging. And I've noticed that lunas from late in the season, like now, are paler, not as brightly colored as earlier generations -
