Comments (67)Back in the 70's I helped with Community Gardens. At one point, the local correctional facility decided to have inmates work their own gardens. The University, with a field close by, provided extremely fertile lots and plenty of cow manure. Things grew beautifully and the inmates were extremely proud of their labor. One night, their gardens were raided and lots of produce was stolen. The inmates were furious. That situation created a wonderful life lesson for these men about how it felt to have your "stuff", whatever that may be, stolen by others. Comments (17)When my daughter got to the age where she'd drag things everywhere and still too young to take direction to pick up & put away, I got into the habit knowing exactly what room/area in the house was I going to next, and making sure I was carrying something to be put away in that room, or put away on the way to that room. After doing it consistently for a short while, it became an immediate brain reflex to pick something up. Over time, I've kind of designated spots in my rooms where I "collect" objects that don't belong in the room. When I leave that room, I pass by the collection spot, pick out what goes into the room/area I'm going to next. It's like I'm always picking up & cleaning, but not really spending the time doing it. Also, I commit myself to correctly putting things away when I put them away. On another note, I admit my computer desk can fall into disarray REALLY fast. When I notice the workspace is testing my nerves, I make myself correctly put away 3 items before I allow myself to check email or get on the computer. Over the course of a day or 2, my workspace gets cleaned up without a real invested block of time. The key point is putting things away CORRECTLY and ALL THE WAY. If that means making a special trip to the basement to put away the hammer I drug out last week...I do it. If that means something needs to get put back on a high shelf, I commit to doing it. It takes so much less time to put something away correctly the first time versus moving something from 1 dumping spot into another dumping spot, and making a nomad out of it. I can honestly say I don't have any object in my house that doesn't have a designated home. If I don't have a proper place to house things, they don't belong in my house. Anyway, that's what I do. Comments (29)I think the best of the bland rooms are perfectly fine. But they aren't particularly engaging, and I think these sorts of things become a self-fulfilling prophesy. You get bored with your sofa or your LR because, well, it's boring. I think the worst of the bland rooms have neutrals that don't even work that well together but people *think they do because "all neutrals work together", and really--they don't. I think there is a certain amount of aged-into commitment, but I think that that really shows itself when things that really need to be replaced don't get replaced. Even if the homeowner who decorated the baroque-regency house was 90, she would have been in her 40s when the house was essentially completed, and that's not so old, is it :) She did it her way and then it was done. The true aged-into interiors I think of are these: My mother had a friend who redid her late 1950s rambler in high mid-70s style when she turned about 50.(Not kitschy 70s, but monochromatic heavy upholstery fabrics and silks and low deep sofas and oversized low tables) Most of the house was unchanged at her death. But I remember when something happened to her bedspread from the high-70s redo maybe in the 1990s and she redid her drapes and bedspread, and she just ordered a matching set of curtains and bedding coordinates from Sears. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't what she would've done when she was younger--it just wasn't something she wanted to put effort into (I was kind of surprised because she made major shopping expeditions to Saks and Neiman's for her clothes right up to the end). The other "grown into" thing has happened at my parents own house. The lampshades have been deteriorating for years, and we have gone from replacing with an interior designer in the 1990s, to trying some from Restoration Hardware a bit later, to trying some from Walmart in the 2000s, to turning them around so the rip is in the back in the 2010s....See MoreTwo strikes on knobs, try try again?
Comments (15)Holly-kay, in my mind you are the hardware goddess of GW; I understood what you meant, no worries! Romy718, if it was just me, I would go all knobs on the uppers. But I am taking dh's wishes into consideration, a little, and I do like the look of my pulls in a vertical position. I have them that way on pullouts and the few lower doors. I could certainly be wrong - I have been spectacularly wrong on hardware so far! Rococogurl, you are likely right. But I just couldn't get those knobs out of my head! I am worried this may be one of Jakuvall's "don't let a good idea ruin a design - use it next time" examples. I may send those knobs back and pay the restocking fee...or decide to use them in my bedroom...or just put them in my kitchen and know that while I love them no one else sees them the same way. I don't think I'm going to have a "next time" in remodeling a kitchen. I'm quite interested in how design elements successfully migrate from different rooms - I think lots of people first see mop (and my mop mosaic) as "bathroomy" and my GC was appalled by the idea of glass knobs in my kitchen - he said they are good for tween girls and strippers, lol! People with my level of talent really ought to just follow design rules and use experts. Winston Churchill once said that American will always do the right thing, after exhausting all other possibilities. 7 years agoI can squeeze in a lot of drawers because I use frameless (IKEA) case and custom sized the drawer's heights.
Here's pic of my 18" cab with 6 drawers including toekick.
Drawer 1- 4" spice with insert.
Drawer 2- silverware daily
You can see I'm starting the measurements for the custom divider.
Drawer 3 - potholders
Drawer 4 - haven't decided yet based on utility. I may need two spice drawers.
Drawer 5 - box of the sterling silver
toekick - extra spice bags
the 18" cab to the right will have the same setup with knives at top then small utensils then small cutting boards / trivets.
The only cabinet with less than min 5 drawers is the bake cab. 2 drawers and toe kick drawer.
It's only 23" high. I have my goodwill table that I cut down into a rollout. Still need stripping, paint and a marble top.
