Do you use the front door as an entrance?
Comments (26)I am a landscaper so I see your solution in what you want to do in the outdoors rather than indoors. If you love the idea of a cottage garden, create one with a meandering path that leads to the door you want to enter. Using plantings for the different seasons you can make it a real pleasure for you or anyone else to be directed to whichever entrance you like. I have seen this done on several projects I have worked on to wonderful effect - granted these are people who have professional designers and landscapers, but you could pull it off with a little investment and investigation. Find images of cottage gardens you like and observe how they interface with foot traffic and entryways. If you do this right, it can add significant value to your home. Just make sure you have a good master plans that takes into account realistic traffic needs and seasons (how will i feel lugging in groceries, kids, grandma, going through bad weather, etc) Be honest with yourself about the compromises you will have to live with - farther from the car, mud? snow?s I love the idea of making your side door the main entrance! Comments (28)Great idea about the foamcore Kippy, that would be fabulous and so much easier than painting. I'll give that some thought. I need to get bold, there are so many amazing paints out there. Everytime I go to Home Depot, there is a new line of metalic spray paints. jlc712, I think that the bookcase is where I can make the next biggest impact in the room. I hate to get rid of our beloved Little House on the Prairie set, but if I find a niece to send it too, that will make the parting a little sweeter. Maybe if I thin out some movies I can store books below in the cupboard. My audiophile husband loves his sound equipment, however. To think, I can't turn half of it on! Great idea about the calendars. Clever and budget-savvy. So hard to throw away those beautiful calendar pictures. I've got to put 9 frames of something above the fireplace. That wreath comes down this weekend, its the Feast of the Presentation so the time has come. Maybe I'll find 9 pictures of the Blessed Mother to frame. There is an endless number of painting of her, and I could gaze at those forever. Of course, my husband would want pictures of National Parks, so I guess I've got a lot of thinking to do. Tibbrix, you are right, this big room needs big furniture. The coffee table is 48" and the sofas are 72" so it gives a foot on each side to sit. Remember, we walk behind the sofas, in front of them, beside them AND we chase Captain around the room! It's really a dog run, I guess. I would have loved to buy large English-arm three cushion sofas and lovely accent chairs, but it's the fact that we move the loveseats (sometimes daily) to watch television or play video games. I know this seems crazy. We only have one functional TV. With seven kids on board (well one is gone but we still have her bedroom that she shares with a sister), all of our rooms are full of kids. I figure that when the time comes to change the furniture once again, I have seven people who would love free sofas. ; ) Need to work on paint, don't have a budget for that now. Thank you so much for your thoughtful replies. It means so much to hear your opinions. -Cupofkindness...See MoreSmall entrance hallway
Comments (14)Shades, it is just sitting on the sill. When opening the window, I only open the top. No big deal. I like it because it keeps me from looking at the neighbors' deck and they from looking in at me. Our houses are close and this gives both of us a little privacy. In winter I bring in my hibiscus (it's in a big pot) and I sit it on a little table in that window. I set the mosaic window aside so the hibiscus can get the light. I usually get flowers on that into November!!...See MoreWhat would you do? sprucing Old World Living Room.
Comments (1)Three suggestions. First, everything in the room skews warm-toned. If you force cool greys in a predominately warm space they will look too harsh. Any grey or charcoal you add has to have some warm undertones. Second, the family room has a lot of visual clutter. I would suggest that she take every single thing off the walls, off the flat surfaces, and off the sofas. Then slowly add back things that she loves, taking stock after each addition. At some point, the stuff is going to tip the space from decorated to cluttered. That is when she should stop adding things to the room. Three, one large dramatic painting over the fireplace will give the fireplace more visual weight. Right now all the little decor items around the fireplace and on the hearth and on the mantle just obscure the fireplace. I don't think she will need to paint it....See Moreaprilneverends
