I love the Moldovan seedling. How did you acquire it? Got a piece to trade?

You've got nice blooms despite the drought. That seedlings is very nice, it deserved a name. It's great to see the humming birds! My butterfly bush is their favorite here. It seems I never have my phone with me to snap pic when I see them. I think the hummers are nesting in my next door neighbors trees his summer. I found a nest in a tree in my backyard last fall after the leaves fell, the nests are soooo tiny and hard to find.

Orchid Corsage is still a beauty and King Kahuna is always a classic. I think my favorite of this group though is Cameo Luster. Just looks luscious.........How neat Sherry you found a nest of a hummingbird. I'm just thrilled to see the few we have around here battling it out over the feeder. It seems like they are almost always females.. Do you know what type you have Celeste?.......Maryl

Dick, I acquired the seedling from Carl Harmon of Harmon Hill Daylilies here in New Hampshire. I saw it growing in his fields and he sold me a couple fans. Carl knew Steve Moldovan personally and saw this seedling in Steve's fields and asked for a piece. It was never named. It is an exceptional daylily and in my opinion, worthy of a name...but it was never introduced. It has incredible substance, almost waxy, and holds up in the heat better than almost any I grow. It increases quickly, is a good bloomer and as a bonus, it reblooms even here in the north. I can probably send you a couple fans since it clumped up in just the 3 years I've had it. Message me on here and we can work out a trade.

Lots of beauties, Celeste. I really need to get some more from OLALLIE as I only have one [Autumn Gold which I got in a trade many years ago]. If I don't have much reblooms [as in this year], it is awful lonely! I especially like September Star, Fondly Kin, and Keith.

Brad, I can always share some of my Olallie's with you if you ever want to trade. I have quite a collection. They may be on the 'plain' side that don't appeal to everyone but when there is nothing blooming in the garden but the Olallie's, they look beautiful. With my short growing season, if I didn't have the lates I would be long done. And I agree, it does feel lonely in the garden this time of year. Rebloom is very infrequent here.

Back to the humming bird nest. Last year a friend and myself spotted a hummingbird sitting in a nest in a tree in her yard. The tiny nest blended perfectly with the smooth bark on the tree. The nests almost look like a knot on the tree, so really hard to spot. If I hadn't seen the nest in her tree I would NEVER have spotted one on my leafless tree.

Celeste, you may be in a drought but your lilies have really come through for you even if they are smaller. And they don't look small in the pics. Just lovely. Don't you just love daylilies that are real troopers?!! And I'm with you-when others are not blooming, any that are look really beautiful. I hope you will be able to share fall scenery pics as you have in the past. I LOVE those and yours are magazine worthy. So beautiful. I hope your fall foliage does not suffer from the drought. We have had that problem in the past when the leaves just turned brown and fell off the trees. Looking forward to cooler temps and more rain!

You really have a lot still going on in your garden, especially considering the lack of rain. Your Moldovan seedling has a really nice look to it. We've been dry here lately, just the last few days the ground has been hard to dig. A few of my daylilies are showing it, I wonder if having so much rain in June/July & even August might have been a real shock to their system now that it is suddenly dry. The ones you sent are all looking great though!

Nancy, can you believe that since you and I last corresponded I haven't gotten any rain? Only a sprinkle once or twice but nothing that soaks in. It's been all sun, all the time this year. Great for the vacationers who come here but horrible for the farmers and gardeners. Glad the lilies are looking good....I am sure they sighed a big sigh of relief to get out of here....lol. The ones from you are getting watered so they look good. I just can't really water anything else to save our well water.

Kate, I doubt the foliage will be glorious this fall. Already trees are dropping BROWN leaves and it's not even foliage time yet. I heard on the news that the damage to the trees will not be fully evident for 2 - 3 years and that we could lose trees then from this year's drought. I will try to share some pics if anything looks good next month.

Sherry, I have never seen a hummingbird nest but always wondered how tiny and cute they must be. And the eggs must be microscopic! What a treat for you to have actually seen the bird in her nest. I am going to look more closely now.

Brad, I will message you. I will have to wait until spring to do a trade since I am having more surgery for skin cancer in the next couple weeks. Also, my plants are really stressed from lack of water and I don't want to divide in this weather. But definitely I can share some Olallie latebloomers with you.

Maryl, I always thought they were ruby throats because the male has the red throat and the females don't but I could be wrong. We seem to only have the one kind. I know some parts of the country and the world have more exotic types (I've seen pictures). These fly south in the fall and I am always sad to see them leave. They can't overwinter here.

Just wanted to send a note on the hummingbirds!! Although I am in the south, they don't overwinter here either although we will occasionally have some rogues who come in!! We have a wonderful Audubon hummingbird festival not far from where I live (this year was September 9-11) where you can go and see thousands at their feeders, watch the banding, hear lectures, etc. They are flying through on their way across the Gulf of Mexico-wow, isn't that amazing!!! And I was afraid you might say that about your foliage. I have seen it here many times where trees just brown and drop their leaves without a color change at all. Although I know you don't want a brutal winter, I am hoping for lots of rain at least for you-droughts can be hard to recover from for trees, plants, land and people!
