How to "thin out" my Salvia

I planted three of these "Lyrical Blues" Salvia plants about 15 months ago. They have gone crazy spreading! They gave me two, long-lasting blooms this summer and are about done now.

They are crowding by sedum to the left and the asiatic lillies planted behind them. My sister says to just just stick a shovel in there and take "chunks" out (roots and all).

Is that the best way to thin them out?
